Junk Mail Currently Inaccessible

Posted (August 4th, 2008 at 8:54 pm PST) by Jason C

Due to a database error, any users trying to get at their Junk Mail settings right now will run into some problems.  Our admins are currently restoring the tables for all Junk Mail users and the system should be back up just as soon as that restore completes.  It might take a couple hours to run thru, but we’ll be sure to update this status blog post as the restore rolls along.

Update: This entry should have been updated when the restore completed — but that doesn’t appear to have been the case. Any users continuing to see issues with their Junk Mail settings and quarantine should contact Technical Support at once.

Thanks for the heads-up, even though I think most people can do without junk mail for a few hours.
Any ideas on what caused it?

nice updates?

I like how FN makes a determination for the rest of us :-)

Yes, lack of junk mail access isn’t in the same league as requiring a defibrillator, but it’s annoying for DH to have a bunch of junk mail related outages so near each other.

I also love the opaque, “due to a database error”, which is, in reality, “due to the shoddy programming or systems administration of one of our l33t hax0rz we are experiencing a downtime during business hours and we have no idea how long it will take to fix”.

I feel sorry for Dreamhost actually — they have the biggest group of whiners as customers I’ve ever seen outside my own industry.

I can access mine, but I cannot pull the good messages out of the pool of bad, nor delete the bad ones. Is this the same issue or something new?

I also can’t get messages caught in quarrantine to move into my inbox. This isn’t “lack of junk mail,” it’s “can’t access important mail that went into the junk mail folder because I use a whitelist.” I can at least view it, so that’s a bit of an improvement over the previous quarrantine folder presentation.

I use a whitelist with a 0/0 policy, and so often need to get unwhitelisted messages - today there were none. But I tried deleting junk mail and it won’t. Kinda the same thing. No whining, just checking here for others with similar problems and as precursor to tech support contact if it continues.

I’m experiencing the same thing Pandrake. Deleting the junk mail doesn’t work.

And I love how it’s considered “whining” when one points out key dreamhost services (yes, mail and junkmail are key services) are failing to work properly.

No one’s suggesting we contact the FBI, sue them in a class action, or do anything silly. But DH screwed the pooch again on the rollout of the new junkmail system, and I can’t say I’m surprised.

Why do I stay, you ask? They’re cheap, and other people are worse. No reason not to call DH on their crappy service, but it explains why it might be “out of the frying pan and into the fire” if you leave.

Here’s the response I got through the panel:

This is just a notification that your message has been moved to our severe problem queue. This queue is for major outages that cause a large amount of support to come in. Our goal is to resolve the problem based on the information you have provided. We will then send you an update once the issue is resolved. Depending on the problem it may take longer than 24 hours for a response. Please hang in there, when messages are moved here your problem is given top priority. Please note that callback support is not available for messages moved here.

Lack of access to junkmail would be acceptable if the junkmail filter worked! No matter how I configure my settings I always end up with tons of junkmail in my inbox and tons of real mail in my junk mail box. Therefore, it’s just as important to have access to junkmail as it is to my inbox…

Plus, this new junkmail system seems to have plenty of new bugs. The ‘junk mail’ that appeared in my filter today was sent on Monday (3 days ago) - the delay of this business critical email is a huge problem alone. Plus, the addresses from which they were sent are in my whitelist (and have been for months) - so the filter is trapping whitelisted emails now, which is another huge problem. Before the recent changes, when I got an email from a new contact, I would click ‘add to whitelist’ and at least the person would be whitelisted with a single click. Now clicking on ‘add to whitelist’ takes me to a settings page, from which I have to find the ‘edit spam filter’ settings, click this, then manually enter the email address (or click ‘back’ twice to copy/paste the address, then repeat the same sequence…). It’s a huge pain.

WTF, Dreamhost???

And another thing. rubble rubble rubble rubble. This last post made me get a new keyboard cover.

Quit whining! Thx dreamhost

Dreamhost is very clever. They have invented a “quit whining” bot that posts twice for every complaint posted to this site. I guess that’s how they’re spending the time they should be spending keeping their systems up.

Thanks Pete, you’re my hero!

Well, it seems to be fixed. Bizarrely, a pile of mail from 3-7 day sold suddenly appeared in my junk folder. Some stuff I had been looking for, too, and asking the sender to send me again. Let’s hope it stays fixed.
