File server upgrades
Posted (August 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm PST) by KellyWe will be continuing our file server upgrades to address a long standing SATA driver bug in Solaris 10. These will occur over the next three weeks, starting Monday, August 18, 2008 at 10pm Pacific time. We will be doing one to two per night, depending on any hitches which may present themselves along the way. Estimated downtime per file server is no longer than 4 hours.
These upgrades will affect your websites, email, ssh, and ftp access to your files if you are on one of these file servers. No email or data should be lost during this process. MySQL will not be affected.

why not get a web host in europe then?
@Green….
Um I dunno about you but websites are seen worldwide, when the US isn’t viewing my work, the Europeans or Asians might be viewing it. I agree that some variety may help cut down on the appearance of problems in a worldwide aspect. Some of us are not locked to our own little world.
@Green: even better: why doesn’t dreamhost start a subsidiary in Europe? If there was a hoster in the EU that offerred the same value-for-money and service/features, I’d be willing to pay the same amount I’m now paying in euro’s. That’s 50% more profit for Dreamhost!
Translation: Here’s some more servers we’re going to screw with. If you’re hosted on any of these servers, prepare for extended downtime - and by extended, we mean even more than usual, which we think is pretty damn impressive, because I mean seriously, what other hosting service can keep their clients’ sites down for weeks on end and then crack jokes about it, while you dumbass plebs tell us what a great job we’re doing, AND pay us for it. HAHAHAHA wow you people are stupid. You know we sometimes take the servers down for no reason at all, and have bets on what percentage of posts here will be telling us how great we are. We LOVE to mock you idiots, really, but I digress..
well, I have not experienced any downtime when I am working on my sites, and I dont imagine many people do, as a matter of fact, I was notified once that I WOULD have downtime, for a few hours, the dreamhost guys finished before I had a chance to even look. I recommend dreamhost anyone I like, you on the other hand should use something else.
How come the RSS feed always says things are resolved when they’re not?
Can someone tell me - are dreamhost the worst hosting company out there or have I just been really unlucky since moving one of my blogs here a few weeks ago? I find it s-l-o-w and the customer support is extremely poor, in my experience.

@Hmmmmm
You are not being serious are you? You haven’t noticed how the service is often either down completely or too slow to use?
Do you work for Dreamhost?
I am going to blog about my experiences with Dreamhost. Thankfully, that blog is hosted on a really fast, reliable FREE server so people will be able to read it.

Hi! My name is Jim Connolly. I write a blog on wordpress.com. My Google pagerank is 5 and that means that I’m allowed to walk around with nose high in the air. I’m writing an article on Dreamhost and how bad their service is! I’ll be sure not to mention how Dreamhost revolutionized the web hosting industry by being one of the first hosts ever to offer large amounts of disk space and bandwidth at a price even *I* could afford, since 1997. I’ll be sure to talk about how Dreamhost tells their customers about their problems rather than not providing a forum or status page for customers to share experiences. I’ll be sure to write about http://www.dreamhoststatus.com because I think it’s great fodder material. My google toolbar says that dreamhoststatus.com is a 6, but I’m sure after my article I will be a 7 and will lead the world in a crusade against the world’s worst company ever (even the BBB gave them an F!).
The best part is, I think I’m really important to the tech industry and really think that a lot of people will care about what I write.
All my sites are down again.
As for how sucky dreamhost is, I look at the perspective: they’re not charging very much. So they economize, don’t plan for redundancy, etc. You get what you pay for.
@ Jim Connolly
Yeah, you have gotten the raw end of the deal. I have not noticed any downtime on my blog (which I proudly host at Dreamhost). I have had an account here for a while and have never had an issue with downtime. Seems like since your blog is so important to the tech community that it cant go down for some maintenance that perhaps you should pay extra for a private server. Or host your own. Or you could always pay a crap load to another host with supposed 99.999999% uptime. Just be sure to let us know how that works out for you.
We have been using Dreamhost for 7 years.. It does stink. Plain and simple.
We liked the way we could have one “master” account and many accounts under that.. like a reseller account but simpler.. so we right away put a number of accounts on our DH servers. We were young and naive..
Over the last year we have moved ALL of our important sites away from DH.. The only sites left are basic sites..
The thing that always got me was how flippant they have been about MAJOR multiday outages, like the childish way the dealt with the “Oops!! we fat fingered and accidentally billed everyone WAY WAY more then they should have been billed”.. that happened a while back..
Totally childish..
You know how hard it is to move sites. That’s why we elect to keep the “little” sites here. As they fall off we dont add new ones.
Truly you get what you pay for here. Snotty unshaven slovenly support, and partial uptime, all wrapped in an idiotic control panel…
Hello and welcome to DreamHost. Now sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up, and give us your moneyz. You want what? Service? What the fuck do you think this is - a charity? Fuck off! For your insolence, we’re going to triple bill you up to the end of the century, then delete your account for breaching the TOS we just made up at the time so we could delete you. Oh, and your mother is a slut. Nyahhh! Now fuck off.
and don’t think you’re getting a refund either, you pissant.
I don’t see yoshi server mentioned, but our PHP site has errors all over it and user login sessions time out within 30-60 secs, rather than our standard 30mins.
Did I miss an announcement re yoshi?
I’ve been with Dreamhost for at least 7 years. Three of my friends host sites with Dreamhost as does the company that I work for as CIO. With all of that personal experience with Dreamhost I can say with authority that they are a great hosting service. My costs have never gone up in the entire time I’ve been with them…but the services included in my plan are always increasing or getting better. Downtime? There isn’t a hosting service out there where you won’t experience at least some. But here at Dreamhost it’s rare and minimal.
Chris, you are CLEARLY full of shit. Minimal? Rare? LOL! You sound like Saddam Hussein’s old Information Minister - you know, the one who was on tv saying that Baghdad was fine and the Americans were nowhere near, as an American tank rolled past in the background. You’re either a complete fool, or you’re DH staff, and those two things are certainly not mutually exclusive. Seriously, who are you trying to kid? - besides yourself. Look at the history on this very site, published by your masters, along with the THOUSANDS of complaints from frustrated subscribers who are sick of the constant downtimes for months, nay years, on end. Get a grip you idiot.
I’ve been with DreamHost for a couple of years now, and I find that the package they offer is perfect for my current needs. The thing I really hate is the problems I have with maintaining my sites via http://FTP. I am constantly having problems with it, if I use the web based FTP it’s fine, but via dreamweaver I get no end of timeouts or invalid http://ftp. If they could sort that out I’d be happy.
my website is down since week.
i can,t go on my admin pannel
idon,t know how to design and publish.
my friend he ,i don,t know where he is.
i lost everything now.
very hard to backup.
i was using fortunecity hosting i did everything by my self. but with this i can,t sorry
Fellaz, am I the only one who is experiencing total dns failure right now? To test, I set my local computer’s dns servers to dreamhost dns as they suggest for testing before moving dns to them, and now, NO sites will resolve to their ip addresses. (not even google/ms) shudder….
Wow, for all the stinging commentary out there I must be (seriously!) lucky as i’ve been with DH for around 5 years now, know more than half a dozen people who use them and i’ve only had a couple of outages in that time. And none of the people i’ve ever recommended DH to have left them….
@bah ….. mate……. you realise you’re being the definition of a hypocrite, right? You’re actually complaining about the fact that you can complain (because, ironically, DH provides you with a public forum by which to do it!) while at the same time spitting chips about other people who are commenting about how they get good service?!?!? Abusing the guy (personally) for his commentary about his service is just below par in my view…..
For the others, i’ve never really understood the lashing out about DH (or, to be honest, *any* tech company for that matter). They provide a service, there are thousands of other companies who do a similar thing. If you’re hosting is honestly that horrible, i’d take my time, energy and effort and invest it in a move away from using their services and be happy with someone else.
All this anger, sarcasm and spitefulness will do nothing better than to give you all a coronary.
For me, i’m happy, so i’m staying. For those that aren’t, I (genuinely) wish you the best with whoever your provider is and hope that you don’t continue to take it all too personally.
Adam
dreamhost is a great hosting company with absolutely excellent customer support but when this shi[f]t happens everything is kind of lost connection with my databases and templates with an erroorr: error connecting database server.
i hope they will hire a “cloud verifier” to take a look at these changes on their farms! DREAMERS ARE AWESOME!
Dreamhost is a great company, Sure they go down every once in a while but they are quick to reply to emails and they have a great attitude.
I would recommand them to any of my clients.
Thanks DH

With respect, all the work you do “in the night” usually affects Europe “in the day” Those times here in the UK mean that we will be affected until 10.00 AM - why not vary these things so that everyone takes a hit?
Just a suggestion.
