Central Services Outage

Posted (August 15th, 2008 at 11:30 am PST) by kitchen

One of our central database servers has kernel panic’d and is currently being rebooted. For the mean time, most central services are offline (web panel)

We have our mysql gurus working on it and we expect to have things back up and running shortly.

UPDATE 1:56 PM: Okay this has been resolved and our panel is up again. This would not have caused domain downtime, so if you are having issue it is not related and you will need to contact support.

Thanks for the update. It’s good to hear that things will shortly be back to normal.
However, I am happy that all of my sites/mail are still operational during all of this.

thank you
had e-mailed that I was unable to connect to the control panel
please disregard

I’ll bookmark this link and be sure to check it 1st in the future

2 times in 2 days, I hope this time it isn’t down for a half an hour

Well this seems to be affecting me as well… This sucks. All my sites are still unavailable. Not a good thing DH. Pick up the pace.

Frustrating! Hope its fixed soon.

Just as soon as I sign up to…. not a good start to say the least.

I use dreamhost to run my dialysis machines! Why isn’t it working! OMG OMG!

@Bob, lol.

things are running slow as shit.

Yeah, I’m having issues with connections that start to time out once the reach the dreamhost network.

WTF guys. I just upgraded to your PS service to avoid this shit. Sorry to flame you, but WTF? Why can’t you figure out how to have stable servers??

take it easy after all they are doing all they can!!

I’m on a PS and my stuff is running slow ass hell WTF!

I’m down too. Had a client call asking where all my products were. Thought he was goofy. Turns out he was right, the site’s down. Was wondering why it was so quiet.

My panel.dreamhost.com still no loads :/

@Marc & @Twiz — Yeah! WTF I have a PS as well and I can’t even get in at all. All my sites/domains are still unavailable — since this morning. Seriously WTF. Dreamhost is starting to suck a$$.

I always wondered why people really hated DH and now I can understand. Its pretty sad that such a company can’t maintain good SLAs. Ever heard of redundancy? and disaster recovery? This is not a free service that DH is just giving out. We’re all paying good money for this and what do we get? a “Sorry about that guys”?

/sighs and searches for a new host.

just another day of downtime, how many more hours?

I really need my panel and I can’t get in it. *sighs*

Control panel is very slow and getting timed out…

I am with Zyron, it is disappointing to just sign up a few days ago and not be able to do anything because you go to sign in and ………. you ………. have ………. to ………. wait. It is frustrating. I hope this gets resolved soon because I have had this slowdown since yesterday and have made no progress in getting my site up and running.

It sounds like nastialiukin.com (floor exercise gold medalist last night) is hosted by Dreamhost. Dreamhost narrowed the problem down to that site. Then turned off the auto-playing flash mp3 streamer on the front of her site and got it under control. I’m still down so it can’t be that under control. I have to say, that was an entertaining competition last night. But please get my site up!!!

Come to think of it, being that 90% of the population of the world (how many billion) is hitting that site right now, we won’t be back up until her traffic slows or they stop that site from pointing to Dreamhost.

Resolved my a$$

Well it seems like the slowness is probably tied Nastia’s site rather than this specific problem. I do think Dreamhost should update the status to page to let us know what’s going on.

I have several sites on snicker, and they aren’t working, either. The only one that is working is the one that doesn’t use mysql, and even that one loads very slowly.

Pretty frustrating, I can’t even use subversion right now. Why did dreamhost mark the problem as resolved?

Everything is down for me and I can’t contact support via web panel so hope they read this. Fryer/Spunky/Gummi

All of my sites are down or extremely slow - ftp is timing out - and not appearing to be working.

Nothing is working, no email, ftp web panel, website. How is this resolved?

Same here, supposed to launch a website today.

Just my luck!

Still running slow as shit….

I have 4 clients b*tching at me all day because what I promised would be complete today can’t be! Arg! Thank god my emails on google apps.

They need to point her site elsewhere temporarily!

This reminds me of when I used a 1200 baud modem.

NO CARRIER

Hmm, over three hours and no problem report here… What is up with that? I realize they are trying to fix the situation, but seriously how long would it take one person to update this site?

All three of my websites are either down or running slow and I cannot get into the panel to send a support request. When I tried to email my email was returned and I was told to use the panel to submit my support request!

Apparently about as long as it would take me to update my site right now.

I really hope they give an explanation of what is causing the current service interruptions, I sure hope it isn’t because one person’s site got featured.

my sites are down - cant even access the panel to enquire about it

I don’t know why the status is set to resolved, my sites don’t load, control panel doesn’t load too so can’t contact support, I sure hope is not related to one site, if it is we are doomed if more than one site gets featured.

Multiple domains on multiple machines are all either down or dog ass slow. The panel is also down and/or too dog ass slow to function. It appears that things are so broke than no one can get to the panel to report it! WTF is going on if everything is reported as resolved?!? Perhaps you folks at dreamhost should get some shell accounts on some machines far outside of your network so that you can see when things are so horribly broken as they are now!

Even if they changed where nastialiukin.com points wouldn’t it take hours or days for it to propagate through the net? There really is no 15 minute fix. An overload of hits are being pointed at the 7 OC3 (last I heard) lines coming in to Dreamhost and short of telling every server in the world to stop pointing towards us they will still overload the incoming lines.

I still can’t access the panel… nor is my email working. So perhaps the issue is not resolved.

Panel is down, can’t access email either. My site is slowed to a crawl too. :\

Can’t connect to our webpage or redirect http://ftp. Also the panel takes about an hour to load. I guess “resolved” is a little too strong a word to use in this case.

It’s probably true that this specific problem is resolved, and has nothing to do with the current extremely severe problem of many if not all of dreamhosts customer sites and services are down. I’m personally posting here because I can’t get anything else to work! I can’t get to the panel to contact support so I guess if we all keep posting here, maybe they’ll stumble upon the flood of comments and see that something is up!

@Rich — yeah not sure what the steps are to dealing with such overwhelming traffic. However, Dreamhost could at least acknowledge the issue and give its customers an update. This has been going on for hours, to not acknowledge it… well kinda sad.

This is not resolved, I too, can’t access my sites, anyone has phone number for dreamhost

Well if this matter has been fixed then why can we not access (or extremely slow) our dbase related pages, etc. It is now 4 PM on a Friday Pacific - am wondering how many are holding off weekend given client complaints. No good people.

They definitely know things are bad — no doubt. I just wish they’d give us an update of some sort. I love dreamhost though it’s times like these I’d appreciate phone support of some sort. The lack of communication blows.

Even static (non php or database) pages are loading dog ass slow or not at all, so there’s something more going on than ‘just’ a db problem I reckon.

Can I get my domains transferred to wherever dreamhoststatus.com runs from? Seems to be a good box!

Come on DUDES what is up? This sucks.

I wonder how long this is going to take. I have no problems with my sites or my e-mail. just my panel. This seems like forever….

How’s the weather out there in CA? I’m getting some pretty bad deja-vu of a time when myspace and dreamhost melted down before our very eyes…

Just a thought… IF nastia liukin’s site is the cause of the problem by drawing enormous traffic, maybe dreamhost should put it offline temporarily with a message indicating that, so people don’t keep trying to load it over and over ? Why allow it to continue to serve pages ?

I have no e-mail access, no Dreamhost web site access…nothing. It’s as if Dreamhost itself is gone.

Since my business requires e-mail access, and mine’s been down for most of this afternoon into this evening, and I can’t send or receive, I’m screwed.

What is going on there I hope it’s resolved soon.

My site has been down for about 3 hours now. & Fridays are the busiest day for my site so this royally sucks. I realize they are probably busy trying to fix this but seeing this page say resolved does not help me at all when I know I can’t access my site or my panel. If I could just get an update & a guesstimate on how long this is going to be I could calm down some. I have been w/ Dreamhost for like 5 years now & am usually happy but come on now. This is ridiculous.

By the way, I have a dozen web sites hosted by Dreamhost. My clients are screaming for their e-mails. I’m trying to update a site and send/receive e-mail through another one. Or two. Or three.

It’s stuff like this that makes me want to find another host. Maybe not pull all of my business from Dreamhost. But not have all of my eggs in the (often severely broken) Dreamhost basket.

Always the same thing, every single time I wan to make a change in the site something happen.

Luckily I touch my website every… mmmm… can’t remember when was the last time, probably it was because I couldn’t do anything!

We’ll see if next February I’m still with them

Everyone: Click on Network/Router Problems link above. It seems their upgrade didn’t go as smoothly as they would have liked (does it ever?) and now their entire system is down. Severity level: High. Resolved: No.

Looks like we’re in for another long haul because Dreamhost spends more time being “green” than they do being efficient.

My panel is back… for now

We are still unable to login into pur web panel…

please do the needful…ASAP
