File Server Upgrades 2008-08-20

Posted (August 19th, 2008 at 11:15 pm PST) by kitchen

Tonight’s round of upgrades include the following servers:

boppity
scooter

We will be starting with boppity tonight in about 20 minutes. We will post updates as things progress!

Update: 1:58am pacific: boppity is upgraded and we’re currently working on taking care of straggling issues before we get started on scooter.

Update: 2:39am pacific: ok, boppity has the all clear. We’ll be starting on scooter momentarily.

Update: 6:32am pacific: scooter’s upgrade is complete and things should be back to normal. If you’re experiencing any issues, please contact support!

Does DreamHost have any special “always online” option for hosting?

Is this the worst hosting company out there or have I just been unlucky, since moving my blog here a few weeks ago?

@Jim
A hosting company improving it’s hardware and software, doesn’t make it the worst! You can always leave if you’re unhappy.

@Sanjin
Yes they have, it’s called, “go away and pay someone else 300+$ a month”!

Hej funny guy, DreamHost should quote your answer next to “OMG! EXTREME CRITICAL EMERGENCY!! EVERYTHING’S BROKEN! People are DYING!” option in support panel,

@ Jolidog
Fact: I’m very satisfied with Dreamhost (have been since 1999)
Fact: I really get tired of you guys assuming that everyone is on a cheap plan at DH.
Fact: We -do- pay around $300 a month to Dreamhost.

You and your fellow know-it-alls are just as annoying as the “DH sucks” crowd. Why not try to be constructive instead of obnoxious?

Ok, here is my problem.

I have services that were offline last one or two hours. I’m not going in details about what are these services, but the thing is that they require permanent Internet connection. Just to mention that these services are independent from website operating on the same address, so I don’t care much about website as I do care about database that these services need.

So here is the solution of problem.

Suppose that DreamHost have one “special” server (or more) where I could setup databases and vital scripts that will be non-stop online. No upgrades! Leave it like as is, don’t mess up with it, just make sure he will be non-stop online working - unless they need to fix some security breach.

My point?

I am satisfied DreamHost customer. Still. I also helped solving one issue with control panel. So I’m a good guy also :-) I understand maintaining so many servers is not easy thing, and of course sometimes they need to “disconnect” us while they are fixing things, as fast as they can of course. But downtimes are not rare thing on DreamHost, as I have expereinced since 2004.

So I think my suggestion is not so strange after all, right?

P.S. I hope Josh Jones read these comments and will consider adding this special feature one-click-button option in newsletter, presenting it like Steve Jobs introducing gapless playback feature in iTunes ;-) or I will unsubscribe… NOT

Just appears that I am now having problems with my subversion
Commit failed (details follow): Can’t get exclusive lock on file ‘**********************/db/transactions/3041-1.txn/rev-lock’: No locks available
Anyone else getting the same?

My site still appears very slow and won’t always load up.

Somebody please help

DREAMHOST IS A DISASTER…

TODAY, AGAIN, ALL SITES ARE SLOW.

ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?!?!

Yup, my site is down. Dreamhost site is down. Can’t get to my panel. Can’t get to my webmail. Mail seems to be working though, so that is nice.

Same here. My site is down, I can’t get to my panel, and everything’s terribly slow.

I’m quitting. I’m going elsewhere. This is ridiculous.

What’s worse is they don’t even update this page to tell us what the problem is.

Terrible. (And I’ve been with them since 2001!)

yea stuffs down..cant get to panel even to do a test on the account

when the hell will DH update this page for crying out loud? yesterday we also had problems, no update here.

it is ridiculous.

i think they are worried potential customers will come here and see all of the issues with them!

I can’t get into the panel, and yet this issue says resolved.

I’m trying to transfer my domains to another host right now, but can’t do it without the auth codes (which I can’t get because the PANEL isn’t working)

Boy oh boy!

I’ve been a customer since 2006… but I’ve suffered enough.

Yep, just went down here too, about 5 mins ago.

From their support: We’re having some issues right now with one of our backbone providers.

Getting >300 ms ping replies from my website (price server) with packet los of 60%. :(

Why don’t they even update this status page telling us what is going on?

I can barely access Dreamhost.com itself!

My toaster is down. Thanks Dreamhost.

One of my sites is up, one is down. I finally was able to log in to the Panel so I sent a seriously sarcastic ticket in. Does anyone know if L.A. slid into the ocean? I’m assuming that would explain why we have no updates here.

My sites are totally not critical, and I’m way lame on updating them, but it seems lately every time I try to visit or edit them they are down. I wonder what it would be like if I actually worked on them daily. What am I paying for?

I’m having probs with subversion now, too. What is this now, day freaking THREE???? I am about to lose my f’ing mind along with the thousands of dollars I’ve lost with this bullshit. I’ve only had a couple of sales on my site since this whole thing started on the 19th!

That’s it. I need my ass fucked real bad to feel good about myself again….

@ Tim yes I started having the same problem with Subversion since yesterday
