File Server Upgrades 2008-08-21
Posted (August 20th, 2008 at 10:10 pm PST) by kitchenAnd the final 2 file servers for this week are going to get upgraded tonight:
janice
gonzo
We’ll be starting with janice in about an hour, and proceeding with gonzo after janice is completed.
As always, we will post updates here as things progress!
Update: 11:15pm pacific: we are starting on janice right now.
Update: 12:56am pacific: due to some problems with the upgrade process, we are aborting the upgrade on janice for the time being. We will likely finish this up tomorrow night. Sorry for any inconvenience
Gonzo we will be starting around 4am pacific.
Update: 3:48am pacific: We are starting the upgrade process on gonzo now.
Update: 4:35am pacific: Gonzo had similar issues to janice during the upgrade process and we are aborting its upgrade as well. We will likely do these tomorrow night. Very sorry for any inconvenience.
Update: 5:15 AM. All services should be restored. Please contact the Happy DreamHost Support Team if you are still having any issues accessing your sites.

Any chance of sharing the “problems with the upgrade process” with us? Your earlier post about this maintenance said you were running Solaris 10, so I’m sure this problem might be relevant for other people.
I finally switched to MediaTemple almost a year ago due to problems such as these. I can’t tell you how pleased I am. Not only do they own up to their problems, (Dreamhost is no exception in this), they have so incredibly much less of these problems that I laugh at myself for thinking Dreamhost was a “Bargain”. I pay $200/year, and I get rock solid performance, great interface, 24/7 phone support, knowledgeable support teams, and a lot less bull crap. Trust me, if you have anything worth keeping online, then you need to abandon Dreamhost and jump to someone, ANYONE, who really cares about the quality of service and system performance. In my experience, that just wasn’t Dreamhost’s m/o.
@Martin: for some reason the upgrader was not going into the gui interface. The gui interface is the only place where specifying an nfs upgrade medium is allowed (seemingly), so when it was coming up with the text-based interface (which is actually what I would prefer, I wouldn’t have to wait around for 25 minutes while it “sets up windowing system”, but whatever), it was not happy. The reason janice took so long to figure this out is because I went through the entire installer process up to the point where it started doing the upgrade (from the wrong source medium) before I aborted. Luckily these machines have mirrored disks and I was able to boot back up off of the ‘good’ half of the broken mirror (we break the mirror, perform the upgrade, if it works we put the mirror back together and resynch).
Anywho, solaris is a whole lot of fun! ;(

My sites are still down at 6:14 a.m. Pacific time, and no one has answered my support e-mail.
