PHP4 will no longer be available for *new* domains starting 08/26/08
Posted (August 22nd, 2008 at 3:10 pm PST) by jeremyThat’s right, since PHP4 has been officially discontinued, we’re taking our first steps in discontinuing our own support. If you currently have any domains using PHP4 (in either mod_php or CGI mode), they’ll continue to work for the foreseeable future. The only change occurring is that you will no longer be able to set up a new domain as PHP4 or convert an existing PHP5 domain to use PHP4. The few remaining one-click packages we had that required PHP4 are being upgraded simultaneously so that we’ll have no one-click packages that won’t work with new domains. If you’re in a position to do so, this might be a good time to start working on getting your websites working with PHP5 so that the later transition is easier. In most cases, the switch should be trivial.

When can we expect PHP 6 support?
Hey Diesel, try reading bro

I’ll have to agree with Jason, lol
About damn time to be honest.
I’m glad to hear it! I wish more web hosts would start dropping PHP4. It would make all PHP programer’s lives much happier.
But, the php-cli is version 4. When will you upgrade it? or I miss something here?
Good! About time. DreamHost will be ready for Drupal 7 (PHP 5 a minimum requirement)!
One more here interested in PHP6
You can custom-install any PHP version on your Dreamhost account. Instructions are in the wiki.
@silent, re “But, the php-cli is version 4. When will you upgrade it? or I miss something here?”
The PHP5 php-cli version is also available, as described here:

Nooooooooooooooooo .. PHP 5 CGI is MUCH slower than PHP 4 apache module (we’re talking more than 500% slower). test with your own benchmarks if you don’t believe me
if they had allowed PHP 5 as a module it would be fine .. but CGI .. omg its about 500% slower! Thats the reason why I am sticking with PHP 4 apache module in most of my domains.
There’s a suggestion submitted on 2005-07-11 Software Installations “Add support for running PHP5 as an Apache module.” which till now hasn’t been implemented. please vote for PHP 5 as Apache Module by clicking this link -

At least, I can still use PHP 4 as a module for my current domains..
One more interested in PHP 6!
Yeah, let’s replace PHP4 support with PHP6 support.
And I thought DH was supposed to be “cutting-edge”.
it’d be nice to get PHP6 soon after it comes out, but i doubt many hosts take to adopting new software right away because of numerous obvious risks.
i wonder if this will effect the CLI script locations for PHP5 ?
Please do allow existing domains to have php5 module support!!!!
It really would make life much easier for us.
Yes ppl, please show your support by voting for it in the suggestions areas of your control panel. most don’t mind the limitations of running php 4 as a module
I agree with Bootstrike ’s comment “PHP 5 CGI is MUCH slower than PHP 4 apache module”, so please make the option to run php5 as a apache module ASAP before dropping PHP4.
maybe this is the wrong place to ask this, but I have a problem with a dreamhost domain where the root folder runs as php4 and other folders inside as php5. How can I fix this? My code is written in php5.
PreInstaled Php6 will be great.
@Bootstrike: Try running your domain in fastcgi mode. It works much better because you eliminate that startup overhead and it is almost as fast as mod_php. The reason why shared hosts do not use mod_php is because it is a huge security risk. Also I do believe that the PS feature allows mod_php for php 5. Correct me if I am wrong though as I don’t personally use it.
Oh and discontinuing php 4 support won’t be affecting me. All of my domains have been php 5 exclusively.
thank you site admin.
Hrm… still seems that my server is running php4. When can i expect it to be upgraded?

What does this mean for the One-Click installs that require PHP4 to work?
