Network hiccup
Posted (October 24th, 2008 at 10:58 am PST) by andreaOne of our network providers went down for a few minutes but one of the other ones jumped in shortly after to pick up the affected connections. Things were a bit slow and gappy because of that, but the failed network is already working again. Things should be back to normal, but do let us know if you’re still having problems connecting. Please provide details, so we can better assist you.
Sorry about all the inconvenience this has caused.

My site has been very, very slow all day. This is the 3rd day in a row that you guys say that reboot has fixed punch, but it seems to be only a palliative solution.

Advice to all Dreamhost clients: DO NOT upgrade to Dreamhost PS.
It’s not ready for prime time — they’ve completely screwed up our IP addresses and account.
October 24th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
All of our websites are down and I have put a ticket into you guys over 1.5 hours ago.
I expect a response or something. I even ran a scheduled test on “tootsie” server. The test said it could not contact the server.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 24th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Our website has been down all day and there is NO way to contact Dreamhost, no way at all. There call in # (213) 947-1032 says to email them.
I agree w/ xavier, do NOT upgrade to the Dreamhost PS, we did and now everything is screwed up. To have a Dreamhost PS web server and a PS database costs $400+/month, who pays $400/month with NO phone support! Absolutely ridiculous!
I’ve used dreamhost for 5 years and have sent LOTS of business their way. I am now going to move to somewhere else. Basically DREAMHOST SUPPORT SUCKS!!!

@xavier, @Johnny Negretti
I was JUST about to upgrade to Dreamhost PS, can you be more specific about the problems you have? Can you also post your average usage / hits stats and how your costs changed after switching?
I was seriously just about to push the button to upgrade.

@m
they basically reset all our ip addresses we had before without telling us (site still down this minute)
plus your site will not be any faster. zero benefit.

@m,
Looks like our website is back online, there here are some considerations…
For the $ you pay for the PS server and/or MySQL PS…
* No phone support!
* They call you when they want to.
* No control panel, only a power slider
* The dreamhost staff has NO REGARD for live websites, they made changes WITHOUT letting us know in advance.
* In our PS notice page, it states that our MySQL database will be upgraded to the PS MySQL server at midnight tonight, though we need to speak with them to find out more information on what EXACTLY they are going to do, sent in tickets with NO response. This gives us not time to really coordinate and ensure our website will work. So, me and my staff will have to be up at midnight tonight and cross our fingers and just hope for the best!
* Switching to the PS server did help with the speed, though it is VERY OVERPRICED!
When you call (213) 947-1032, it basicaly says…
“F#&@ Off!, leave us alone while we spend you $ on tequila shots”
After lots of research, I probably switch to one of these guys…

NOTE: I’ve worked with lots of different hosting companies (8+ yrs) as I was a lead architect on a software platform that LOTS of hosting companies used and have never seen such poor support!

They were up for a while… now they’re back down. Hiccup fit?
October 24th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Still down and they don’t update their website or customers. Very dissatisified right now.
P.S. 2:31pm and still down.

My dedicated server’s been down for last 5 hours…
Connections are still not fixed?
October 24th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
This does not look good. I just lost connectivity to Dreamhost again—pings are failing to return.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Nevermind, this appears to be scheduled downtime:

my site was down for all of four minutes, so i’d say i’m one happy camper. four minutes isn’t exactly a lot of down time.

I disagree about what some of the people above have been saying about Dreamhost PS. Xavier was somewhat right about the IP address issue, but really just depends on how you have your domains setup. You will get a new dedicated IP address when you switch to PS, so if you have domains pointing A records to the old shared hosting IP address, the sites will be down during the switch if you don’t plan accordingly, but if you have the name servers pointed to dreamhost then it shouldn’t be an issue.
Our company has been using it for about 3 months, and it has made a huge difference in site speed for us. The support team has been pretty good about responding and helping us out with issues, although it would be nice to have some phone / emergency support.
We looked at having dedicated servers hosted with Rackspace and a few other companies like them, and it would have cost us a ton more money. We feel like Dreamhost PS has done the job and been very cost effective.
