barker, spilotro and provenzano outage!

It looks like these three servers had some issues coming back up after a reboot this morning! Normally, upon rebooting, these machines should come back up within a few minutes, however they seem to need to check their disks before loading up the rest of the operating system.

Provenzano should be back up completely, and spilotro and barker should be back up within the next 15 minutes or so!

We apologize for the problems this caused!

Update 11:26am PST: Spilotro came back and shortly thereafter so did Barker. We have made adjustments so that future checks will be preformed more expeditiously to avoid lengthy downtimes. We apologize for the outage.

    I’m a new subscriber to Dreamhost. Having my site down so soon in a critical time of building and publicising my site looks horrible for your reputation. Did I make the wrong decision by hosting with Dreamhost?

    Ah, i’m glad that there’s a status blog like this. I don’t know how long ago the ‘15 minutes’ for barker have been as i’m going wild trying to determine the time zone difference.

    But i’m already glad I know a bit more now.. I guess it’ll come soon.

    To Sam,

    As another recent subscriber to Dreamhost let me answer your question: yes you did.

    There’s an outage of some sort every single day of the week. There simply isn’t a less reliable host anywhere on the planet.

    Get used to it.

    @Sam - I’ve been with DH for a while now and never had any problems (until just now). Give it a bit more time and I think you’ll realise you have made the right decision.

    My sites (on barker) are still down. I’m a recent subscriber as well, and I hope that it isn’t usually this bad. Smack in the middle of the day, too (EST).

    I understand that servers have problems occasionally, not a problem. The problem I have is with not getting accurate information. The posts says 15 minutes. According to my control panel Barker has been down for over 2 hours. If you have an update post it and let people know an ETA of when the problem will be fixed.

    As another recent customer, I too hope this isn’t a regular occurrence. Adjusting for the time difference, this was posted an hour ago, and I still have yet to gain access to my site.

    Time will tell.

    Mainlander, I find that very hard to believe. I’ve been on DH for 2 weeks and have experienced issues every day so far, but admittedly this is the worse one. The lack of updates is totally in keeping with the impression I’ve got of this company.

    As someone said on another forum, if your website was that important you wouldn’t be on dreamhost.

    I’ve signed in in the beginning of october and i’ve not had problems untill now. But ofcoruse i view this differently. I don’t think off time is a disaster if it doesn’t last longer than half a day.

    @Mike - your site looks like it’s back now.

    For those who are asking about DH’s reliability - I’ve been on for almost three years and had approximately 40 hours of downtime (counting any hour in which none of my sites gets a hit as a “down” hour - based entirely on the server logs). About 99.85% uptime. Most of this was two summers ago when the main DH data center was hit by a power outage.

    I would not recommend DH for any kind of business site, however. Since the general TOS does not have any kind of uptime guarantee, I think it would be a poor business decision to use DH shared hosting for a commercial site, even a small one.

    I am fed up with lousy support from dh! I have not been able to ftp for 2 weeks!!! And I get no response from support - unacceptable. I’m going to be switching hosts - bluehost offers great support and pricing. I am a freelance web designer and downtime is not just oops!

Although it now seems to be up and running, I still have errors and issues I know I wont get help with since DH is ignoring all my support tickets. Hhhhmm….so when I write up my invoice to DH for all the money I have lost this week, where should I send it?

    Is it just me, or Genovese is having massive slowdown, and a lot of 500 Internal Server Errors popping up? Has been so for the last 3-4 hours, maybe even more. My sites barely open and PHP code breaks due to slowdown…
