capone hardware failures
Posted (November 17th, 2008 at 10:54 am PST) by danwyThe server, capone, is currently having some hardware problems. One of our admins suspects that the Nic card went out and is currently on his way to the datacenter to swap the hardware out. We should have this back up shortly and we’ll update this post once it’s resolved. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this causes you.
Update 12:15pm PST: This server is now back up and running as of about 10 minutes ago. We’ve tested several sites hosted on the server and they’re back up and running, so things should be back to normal now. Of course, if you still have problems please contact support and we’ll be happy to look into it further.

This is getting to be a regular problem, going to look for another host if this happens again one more time after today, really poor
Im with you andvaranaut, crossing my fingers.. may god bless DreamHost!
Capone has had way too much downtime in the last few weeks. Unacceptable.
This sucks!!! Twice in two weeks. Unacceptable. I send this site to clients. Get it together please!!!
Not feeling the love guys. I am seconding the sentiments here. I hope you can resolve this quickly or port every to a different machine tout suite.
Every time I check this status on the server, it seems to be under a high load. We are running a business here and REALLY can not afford unplanned downtime.
Ditto on the comments. I’m not pleased with being on this server either, and hope that this can be resolved soon.
opening up a yahoo hosting account now. later, nightmare-host
Thirded. On Tuesday I made a big announcement about my great new service on Twitter (www.TweetBuddy.com, by the way). Immediately, the Capone went down for 5 hours. It’s been acting horribly ever since and today, when I made another big announcement, guess what? The server is down again. I don’t think that Dreamhost realizes that uptime is a key factor in the website world and that people are seriously affected while they mess about. If the result of todays fiasco is that we all have to sit around waiting while another 4-hour filecheck occurs, I’ll be spending the site finding a reliable new server. Don’t want to have to do it but what’s the option? The server is basically unreliable.

Not feeling the love either here… from the comments My site is affected by the outage too. But I am very much accepting of the downtime given DreamHost’s long streak of general awesomeness (and low cost).
love,
nate
Yep. Not good.. I have only been a customer for a few months and seen lots of downtime. Is this normal over a year?
Mike
I am quite surprised DreamHost doesn’t seem to have some sort of redundant server working in the background somewhere just in case, although I do understand you certainly can’t really turn off and on a server when it goes down, much like a light switch.
Yeah, Mirroring and load balancing seems like it might be a good Idea. I am new as well. I was referred by a colleague. Low cost is great BUT we still want it to work. Glad it is back up so quickly though and I will say, That is indeed a good sign.
I’m glad I seem to have very few problems (mostly 10 - 15 minutes of downtime here & there, but definitely acceptable) I, however realize what DreamHost is… INEXPENSIVE hosting.
Price, services, reliability. Choose 2. I chose dreamhost because I don’t rely on my website for my livelihood… if I did, I’d probably go with a host that guaranteed 99.9% uptime and had the same services (at most likely 3-5 times the monthly cost). If you want better uptime, I would recommend you find a new host. Just be prepared to pay more.
I found a host that guaranteed 99.9% uptime… yes, they delivered & it was about the same price as DH. Customer service sucked (it would take days to get back to you & all they’d say is “it’s something you did”), they charged you additional fees for everything and had very limited space & bandwidth (5GB space, 25GB bandwidth). I’m glad I switched to DH and I’d like to thank the DH team for everything they offer!
Are you on commision?
@ Mike
Oh, Boo hoo. He’s right. Sh*t happens, deal with it or find a new host.
I was affected by this, and although it was slightly annoying yes I’d just like to say thanks to whoever was involved in sorting it out. Your efforts are appreciated.
@zethreal - My feelings exactly. Once my game has any players, I might switch the site to a more reliable host. Until then, DreamHost has great service and features. http://www.potentialgames.com/blog/
If you offer a service for money you need to provide that service.
I don’t sell you a car for to dollars then after the deal is done tell you you have to pay extra for the engine and if you don’t like it you can go elsewhere!
If you want to offer a cutprice service you find cost savings on things that don’t mean your you offer half a service.
Supposedly fixed!
Whats this then?
Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Why on earth is there no mirroring or redundancy?
Matt: See zethreal’s comment. Price, services, reliability: Pick any TWO, not three. You want mirroring and redundancy with the same features that DreamHost offers? Hope you have a spare arm and leg!
thnks
I’m having a major service interruption for my email services
on several domains. I can’t even get login to the webmail. The
email server is homie. Does it related to this capone hardware
failure? It’s been few days that the DH support not yet response
to my 3 tickets until now. Does any one know what happend to
the support team? They are responding well before.
my blog is still down it looks like.
Basically I have lost all faith in Dreamhost. They are providing no support what so ever.
I have been experiencing a problem with MyPhpAdmin for the last three weeks. Can not copy tables, or database from one database to the other. A simple procedure that used to work, has just stopped working. They have not been able to provide a solution. Days on end go by without any solution. There just seems to be no one there.
Then today I find that another problem running sp. Can not run SP now.
What is going on at Dreamhost! Wake up and smell the coffee.
Regards,
Simon.
the panel is failure again!!!!
why this week failure every day?
Capone is down again! less than a day after last crash.
DH, what is going to be with that? is it possible to get my money back?
I just checked my websites (Tuesday 7:30am EST) and they are still not working:
Safari can’t open the page.
Safari could not open the page “http://www.paradiseconnections.com/moreyachts.html” because the server is not responding.
I can view other sites on the internet… just not mine!
This is really the first time we have had a major problem with DreamHost. I hope they get it together as I like them.
My sites are all down on capone. I believe this is the 4th case recently. Twice in two days, not two weeks.
My site http://www.littleterrorscomic.com is still down.
My sites on capone still down
Yes mine is down again, this service is rapidly becoming useless
when will it work?
Well, as of 8:30 am EST my sites aren’t working on this server… Are there other outstanding issues that are causing more problems??
All my sites are currently down and I am unable to access the ftps. 13:39 GMT
And yes, I currently have customers asking me what has happened to their new site and is this going to be a common problem.
All sites down. New clients whose sites just launched are having a hard time understanding what is going on. Please help, DH!
My sites are all down on capone. My customers going trouble now.
my site still down http://www.zuqueto.com
Yeah, I filed a ticket on the panel (my sites are down, too) and they say they’ve known about it for a couple of hours…
bonano is down too. this is ridiculous. every freakin’ day.
How easy is it to transfer a wordpress blog to another host, I have had enough
My email has been down on all of my sites now for more than 24 hours. I’ve been a customer of Dreamhost’s for more than a decade, and recommended over 40 customers and I think I’ve reached my breaking point.
Sadly, I’ll be looking at new hosts today.
I think it is very easy to move a wordpress blog to another host, but finding a reliable host is not easy.
Guys, FUCK dreamhost. I switched to MediaTemple 2 days ago, in the process of moving all my sites over.
Oh, and right now I can’t log in via http://FTP. Can’t wait to get rid of Dreamhost
I guess they are not at work yet since they are in California, but it is almost 11am where I live (Caribbean).
Did anybody’s web sites work after they “fixed” it?
I used to use a hosting service that claimed 99.9% up time. They were initially OK, but then outsourced and became really terrible. It took a few years to become totally fed up and finally make the huge effort to switch hosting services.
I’ve only been a DH customer for a few months but at least they admit when they have a problem AND volunteer the information.
I’m sticking with DreamHost..
mine sites were up for a bit after they fixed it last night, but are down again
Well the server is pinging, but there is still no Http service. Hmm. 10:05 EST here.
Still down, guys.
All my sites are still not working on the server Capone. My sites dropped from search engines. This is very unfortunate (((
Yup down again! I have about 5 different accounts with dream host for years now and this is the worst i have seen it. I like you guys / girls but come on this is getting to the point i am losing alot of $$.
Sites just came back online.
Are back up but seem very sluggish……
Phew! Seems to be up now.
geez! I have 100 plus sites ruined!
i man, i have a billion dollar a day business hosted on a shared server for dirt cheap. so when it goes down its my lively hood at stake, its a shame im not smart enough to take my billion dollar a day business to a hosting company that provides dedicated hosting since i depend on my site so much. oh no oh no what ever will i do.
My sites are down again, and as I said in an email to support… I am quickly losing my sense of good humour about this. What is the problem now?
Same here.
This is such BS. Dreamhost has been so easy to use and set up that I have loads of sites on there. Moving is going to be a big pain. Given that redundancy is so important, I fail to see why they need one HUGE server to handle so many clients. they should spread the load.
Anyway, I have requested to move all my sites to another Dreamhost server. Maybe that will do the trick.
Paul’s a funny idiot ain’t he!
Billion dollars.. i bet he still lives with his mum!
If any of us where running billion dolar businesses we would have our own servers.
All we ask for here is more uptime than down in the run up to xmas. This is a first step on the internet ladder for our 200 year old business.
I was thinking of moving up to a private server but how can i trust the sales pitch for that?
I may as well take the plunge and move everything to a another host. Even if its worse i don;t see i will have lost anything.
Mike
Our sites are all down, but the email server is working. When will this be fixed? No new status updates?
Up again.
Still down.
The site keeps coming back up but it tells me my index file has been disabled by dreamhosts, anyone any idea what is going on
http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/index.php.disabled_by_DreamHost
My sites are up but no http://ftp. Not a lot of use to me.
Come on DH, I know you are peeking in on this…. How about an update on what is wrong and a realistic ETR?
If you said our gangster server is going down for a while then I will go and get drunk instead of banging my head against a wall. Last report says it’s fixed but it’s not. Is it?
OK I have been having problems with dreamhost since I signed up a few weeks ago. I am on trafficante server and my site is down now. I can ssh in, but http is down. The load average for the last 15 minutes was 234!!!!!! That is ridiculous.
I requested to be moved to another server after they sent me an email about someone on that server using blackhat seo and it causing problems. They havent moved me yet they just let me sign up on the waiting list.
My site has been down about every other day.
Your website should state clearly that Dreamhost is only for test sites or sites in development, or for sites that no one cares about. You should not say that you are a reliable host.
What kind of crap servers are you running? Why can’t you get servers with two nic cards?
One thing everyone should know is that the servers that arae down on dreamhost status are not all the servers having problems.
Trafficante is down right now but its not on dreamhost status, I have noticed that alot.
Dreamhost should change its name to Downhost
Before anyone says what do you expect for such cheap service, maybe the company that runs this service should state that clearly on their sales page. Say that your service is only for hobbyists who dont care about uptime or else you are engaging in marketing fraud.
My site is a web host review site and guess what I have to tell my visitors now, dreamhost uptime sucks! Don’t use them.
Im moving my site ASAP - there are plenty of shared hosts with 99 percent uptime out there. My uptime has been about 80 percent on dreamhost.
Its really too bad because I really wanted to like dreamhost, I even gave them the benefit of the doubt but uptime has been atrocious.
If trafficante was having problems why couldnt you move me to another server?
Why is there no status on trafficante? It’s been down for a while now. Jesus this place sucks. I’ll be packing my things and leaving and telling everyone I know that Dreamhost sucks.
Guess what! Capone seems to be down AGAIN!
Yeah. No good. Unfortunately I bought a year with these people.
Very very angry, my site NEEDS to be up. Terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible service, needs to be fixed now. I agree with web, this is very dissapointing, I really wanted to like dreamhost but that is appearing to be impossible. Come on, get it together.
What is that crap server?? FIX THAT NOW!!!!! Two days that this server is SUCKS!!!!
Anyone wanna split a good lawyer so we can get refunds?
this is the fourth time i have noticed this problem. what is the status guys. just a blub of BS to get the teeming masses through the hour would be nice.
a lawyer wouldn’t cost much with so many pissed off plaintiffs as this has caused!
My site is still down at 2:00pm Pacific Time.
5pm eastern, DOWN. This is terrible, is there even anyone at dreamhost trying to do anything or are they all just jerking off thinking about my money that i threw down. sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks, FIX NOW.
My users cant download software and going to refund. Two days of falling. (
Found something that is TOO funny! Well, not sure whether to laugh or dry, but I just was reading the October newsletter from owner Josh Jones to see if there was any way to contact him directly (there isn’t) and here is how he signed the newsletter:
########################
Sucky,
Josh Jones
I think he was trying to tell us something!
It makes ME look just as bad when a client calls and is like “WHY THE FU*K IS MY SITE DOWN??” Thanks Dreamhost.
Wow, I got a good night’s sleep and they are still down. They haven’t even bothered to reply to my support ticket or update this post to say that capone is not working.. Come on DH.
trafficante seems to be going back up, hopefully long enough to back up my shit and run.
And minutes later mine is back up too.
my site got deindexed thanks to the outage today! Thanks dreamhost I had just gotten indexed too
ya’know, all the folks that say there gonna go to another host, GO. give us loyal customers more room on the servers. buh bye now.
hello!
My sites are down again! What’s happened?
Please solve this problem as quickly as possible.
I wish so much Dreamhost remains a stable server.
Thanks,
Kalyne
Day two. Still no website. Our website gives assistance to people in medical crisis so as the ticket option says”People Really Are Dying.” How about an update? Dreamhost says all is well again. But my sites have never come back up. I have been with Dreamhost 3 years; service has ALWAYS been first rate in the past. This is very frustrating.
I have moved my web site to another host - it took a few hours to transfer and get everything right. I have a bunch of domains hosted with dreamhost, can I keep my domains registered here and not have a hosting plan?
I hope dreamhost fixes these problems, the basic service is great, the control panel and so much, the only downfall is uptime - the servers are just overloaded - if you look at top when you login to ssh the server load is ridiculous so often. Compared to my new host the server load at dreamhost is 10-100 times as high.
I think the 97 dollar promo code attracts way too many spammers who sign up for dreamhost for a year for throw away domains and run ridiculous scripts on the server.
Maybe requiring drivers license for ssh is a good idea I dont know
sorry to see ya go, really i am. the drivers license for ssh isnt a bad idea either. i mean what just scan the DL and email to DH, there done. ofcourse some of us cant drive because of disability so a state issued I.D. would need to be included in that list.
It’s interesting to count the accounts on capone.dreamhost.com:
wc < /etc/password
gives 2067 now. Similarly, if we count the ssh accounts with
grep /bin/bash < /etc/passwd | wc
we see 600. The command
uptime
gives a load average of 10, in the middle of the US night.
The corresponding numbers for my server on hostgator seem much smaller (”seem” because hostgator apparently handles non-shell logins by a mechanism other than /etc/passwd). If I can believe /etc/passwd, I may have the *only* user account on my server with shell access. uptime says my hostgator server was last rebooted seven days ago, and its load average is 0.8.
There may be several causes for capone’s recent instability, but one of them appears to be that dreamhost has been underinvesting in infrastructure.
And here we go again, down again
Thank you very much for this information.
thank you dreamhoststatus admin

This has been a pattern in the last week, with partial outages, reboots, etc. almost every day, with significant downtime. VERY, VERY, VERY frustrating.
Hopefully the new NIC will make these problems go away. I keep my fingers crossed…
