Baseline Benched
Posted (November 21st, 2008 at 8:27 am PST) by KyleThe web server “baseline” has been having issues with one of it’s network interfaces and consequentially has required numerous reboots in the last few days. Baseline is being moved to new hardware so this won’t be a problem in the future and should be back to normal in about 30 minutes.
Update 10:20 PST: The move to new hardware is going slower than it normally does, we are working on it and hope to resolve it shortly.
Update 14:31 PST: The move finished around noon but forgot to provide a update, sorry about that!

November 21st, 2008 at 10:21 am
Yeah, my site is still down as well. Any updates? It’s been a while now.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:53 am

One week ago, I closed my DH account and moved to HostGator.com. They even helped me move! NO OUTAGES!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:39 pm
One week and no outages? Wow! That is impressive. I have been with DH for 3 years and this is only the second time my site is down. For shared hosting that is pretty damn good. Everybody suffer outages even the big boys who run major dedicated online sites just at Google. Of course, Dan probably works for HG.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:41 pm
My site is on a different server. It’s slow, but not down.
Anyway, this kind of stuff happens. You can’t avoid it.
I just hope it’ll get back to running at full speed soon.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Nope, Dan works for Dan. Working to hard to accept poor service.

Dreamhost is a 21st century Ponzi scheme. They buy Green and Democratic certifications instead of host ratings. They take money for things they don’t deliver. Growth is slowing. The house of cards cards will fall.

dont tell me how rocky the sea is, just bring the damn ship in! (aka. just fix it asap…that is all.)
November 21st, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Every time I try to save a modified file, my ssh session hangs, the previous version of the file is gone, and the new version gone too. There are recovery files available, but the editor (vi) hangs when I try to recover the
previous session. I think something is seriously wrong, and probably with the filesystem.

November 23rd, 2008 at 4:24 pm
I’m looking at 48 hours of downtime, no response via offical support, no acknowledgement that it is down.
I’m on “Kakuji” - anyone else?
November 24th, 2008 at 1:34 am
I’m in the same bad situation of kcortez and I’m on eastman. 48 hours of downtime, two open tickets and no answer from official support.
What the hell is going on? Do we pay for this?
Tell us something!!
November 24th, 2008 at 3:43 am
Except that I’m now at 60 hours of downtime.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:09 am

I’m suffering from the;

error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
November 24th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Not to be too obvious, but none of my servers are listed on this page.
Isn’t this where status issues are supposed to go?
November 24th, 2008 at 8:36 am
Cortez, at this point it’s obvious that the guys here don’t know what’s going on.
November 24th, 2008 at 8:47 am
It’s also obvious that they’ve lost my business as of today.
I can handle some downtime - the price ratio is nice and I get a whole lot for my money. I suppose I expect things to happen from time to time. But right now we’ve got no notice, no reply, no acknowledgment etc.
How do I know that they are even aware anything is going on?
November 24th, 2008 at 9:04 am
Cortez, wanna hear something funny?
I did receive yeasterday a reply from support. It’s the same reply sent to other customers (check the post describing the outage of PS). What is absurd, is that they blame ME for too many scripts sucking memory.
I haven’t changed my Wordpress blog in the past year. Approximately same number of comments/visitors. Always used 188mb memory, and it worked fine.
Now, just because they don’t want to refund us, they are blaming us?
Ridiculous.

I have very very slow access to my ftp server. I am in the process of removing my files from Dreamhost servers right now.
I know, it’s one user in a big bucket but still.
This is simply treating your customers with disrespect. Tell me it’s broken and I’ll deal. Tell me nothing and I’ll leave.
November 24th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
well I have a bunch of domains with dreamhost.. as well, someone I work with on a regular basis has several, our site is slow as anything and has been now for a few days. I’ve been working on a mysql/php project to tie in a service that charges people a small fee for information related to our antiques site, and I launched it a few weeks ago and now, we haven’t had a sale in a few days, sadly, I’m sure it is due to this issue, people afraid of fraud when the machine just grinds away. Fortunately, I have been a computer guy pretty much all of my life and I know how some computer hardware / software issues can be soooo complicated. Some people are good at BSing others, but I tell it like it is and sometimes customers can’t understand why a computer would have problems and they assume going through someone else would make it better. They then end up calling me back, some apologize, others pretend it is for another reason, but the end result is, this stuff can be such a complicated ordeal. I hope the guys at DH can get it straightened out soon, however, it would be nice to hear their heart beat once in a while. I’m not sure why no one is responding to us.
