File-Server Maintenance on 01-07

Posted (January 6th, 2009 at 8:13 am PST) by Sandon

We will be taking the following file-servers down shortly for maintenance tomorrow 01-07 at approximately 1 AM PST. If one of the following file-servers is listed when clicking “Account Status” when logged into the panel this will affect you:

lewzealand, julius, wanda

It also might cause slightly elevated load during the down time on the following servers:

achilles, aero, alameda, alondra, archibald, arrow, atlantic, avalon, aviation, babyruth, barry, bazooka, beaudry, bellflower, blowpop, bonbon, bottlecap, boyd, broadway, burton, butler, catalina, centinela, century, cerritos, chex, cognac, compton, cookie, cordial, cupcake, dingdong, doheny, dorito, drumstick, dumdum, edendale, euclid, fairfax, fletcher, foothill, fundip, garth, garvey, gobstopper, goober, good, gower, grand, grappa, gumdrop, haven, heath, hillhurst, hillmont, hoover, hope, hops, hyperion, jefferson, jurupa, lankershim, larchmont, laurel, lemonhead, limbo-spunky4, linq, locust, look, lucas, ludlow, malt, manchester, mayo, melrose, mento, milliken, mills, monroe, nilla, nix, oakdale, ocean, olive, ord, pico, pikespeak, planters, plenty, pocky, poprock, pretzel, price, pringle, razzle, redondo, ritz, rockyroad, rodeo, rum, sake, saltine, schnapps, selma, skittle, snocap, soto, spree, starburst, sticky, sunset, taffy, tampa, temple, tequila, topanga, vanowen, vermouth, warhead, washington, western, whittier, whopper, wilshire, york

The downtime for each file-server should be in the range of 20-40 minutes during the maintenance.

Update 1/7 1:28am PST: We’re about to start this.

Update 4:15 AM PST: Maintenance is complete on all 3 file servers and all services are restored. Please contact support if you are still having any issues.

what about pellegrino? my website isn’t working.

Actually, I have two sites (crackpixels.com and gnobrand.com) and only the latter isn’t working. Why is that?

and all other of our sites ar enot working for much longer than 1 hour - Why in the world would you do this in the middle of a business day?

sites on coke seem to have some slowdown issues as well.

I’m having issues also in iris, it isn’t on that list though lol

Ditto catcher

One of our important web dev sites is down. Please address asap.

My site is not working. It’s a bad time for it not to work because a lot of people will be coming to it tomorrow to check it out since I’m being featured at a big named bloggers website.

All my sites on bottlecap are not responding. Please advise.

fuck off bitches i am done with you no more payment, fuckers do not deserve money for wasted traffic. i am losing money fucking lame assholes, get lost fuckers.

January 6th, 2009 at 2:36 pmCaptain Obvious Says:

What the fuck people, they haven’t even started work yet, so stop posting here and put in a fucking ticket if your having problems

Whine bitch and moan in 12 hours, until then, go file a ticket

lol @ #10

If you’re losing money, maybe a top-dollar dedicated server suits you more. I wonder why the majority of people here complain about losing money or - even worse - have a mission critical site hosted on a shared server. If you’re site is making you shitloads of money, why don’t you just lease your own private server?

Downtime sucks, even if you only have your family pictures online, but you get what you pay for, and with dreamhost you get a whole lot more than you deserve for a few bucks a month.

mclarin is having problems too.
support has not responded for 5 hours. wondering if the trouble ticket system is tied up too.
can someone please respond?

here is the error from our http log

Not listed, but not working

just a bit of advice.. the downtime mentioned in this post has not happened yet..
1am PST January 7th doesn’t happen for four hours…
any downtime you are currently experiencing is an unrelated issue and should be reported through the panel..

for reference..

I’m on Link… I’m seeing a ‘linq’ with a ‘q’ on the list… please tell me this is correct and that ‘Link’ with a ‘k’ will not be affected… lol… no… seriously now….

Gambit is down for me too, HTTP server refusing connections

Hello everybody!
I need a little help for my acount in Dreamhost.
How can I DELETE one big folder (25GB) in Dreamhost? I have to cancel this big folder…
Thanks in advance…

@ B. Franklin
SSH into the account and navigate to the parent folder and use rm -rf (folder-name)/
be careful though, it wont ask for confirmation it will just do it. and then after its done just do rmdir foldername.

My site has been down pretty much all day, and I am NOT happy. It’s very frustrating that nothing is even mentioned on the status page when their clearly is a problem.

Site has been down for an hr now…

Same here… site has been in and out all day.

I’ve been having “Service Temporarily Unavailable The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.” issues since the day you were blogged on Lifehacker, off and on. Brandine, switcher, lassie, postal. Sigh. Could you please just TELL us something? There is obviously something going on that is SLOWING DOWN everything; taking me up to 5 min. to load a page for the past 2 days, just on Dreamhost, not elsewhere… thanks.

Capone? I’m getting a Failed to Connect message on some of my sites

I just started to use dreamhost today and I just got a terrible first impression.

Something wrong with escobar?

Yup, looks like escobar is down for me as well but not in the list. Its happened twice this week

I’m on nitti and it’s still slow, not to mention refusing HTTP connections off and on for the last day and a half. What’s going on?

My MySQL PS Server is down for 13 HOURS! Ticket opened 12 hrs ago. Did not received ANY reply!

The server castellano is terribly slow for 2 days, even if you say maintenance is over, i can’t upload file into ftp more than 1 time.Opening a directory take 5 minutes, with just 2 littles files into.Sql is slow, very slow, and php is so awfully slow too…

Please do some stufff quick, my website run 5h/24h correctly, and maybe less…
It’s so boring.
thanks.

I’m on nitti too and it’s barely crawling ! My site is cached so very few to no sql queries are made.. just a few php lines (if s and for s) but it takes minutes to load ! What’s going on ! The server is refusing my HTTP connections most of the time .

It appears static html is up and fast but sql server calls (gower to skimble? or one of those) is dead

dreamhost service has been very spotty for two days now, my server isn’t mentioned on the list above, but it’s definitely been affected.

dreamhost needs to ‘fess up.

this just happens to coincide with a major email promo i just sent out, so when my clients click to see my new work they’ll get nothing and I’ll lose a lot of credibility.

thanks a lot dreamhost.

I love how nobody seems to realize that whining in the comments section of DHStatus is NOT THE WAY YOU CONTACT STAFF TO REPORT DOWNTIME.

I wonder if a giant, bold, 30-point red text warning would get the message though? … looking at people like #10, nope :D

I am pretty sure nobody expects to contact the staff or admin through this. They are generally complaining and stating their troubles. Yes sometimes some of the comments are idiotic BUT a lot of the others just help confirm the problems other costumers are having. I come here to see if I’m the only one experience these problems or not.

It good to see that I’m not the only one so now I know to just be patient and wait till DH fixes the problem.

I’m also on nitti; there’s definitely a problem.

[nitti]$ uptime
08:44:12 up 13:16, 10 users, load average: 3383.43, 2323.34, 2000.87

Dreamhost better not be putting people who volunteered to move on the same server. I would assume people who want to move and risk any problems are bound to be more vocal and demanding. 50 people who are concerned with performance and want to move will likely use more resources than 50 people who couldn’t care less. There needs to be some balance.

My site is running great! And it relies heavily on a custom php.ini configuration. I love DH.

I’m on nitti as well. Today is the worst day I had to face. I’m writing from italy and unfortunately my website is still down. I opened 2 support tickets but I haven’t received any answer yet.
It’s unbelievable how many time my site went down since I create my account on DH (june 2008). These problems seem to affect always the same people :(

I’m also on nitti.

I think it is too often down the server

what makes me laugh is that Nitti is not even in the list they provided on the home page of dhstatus ……

my file server is dribbler and none of my sites is up.
Last 2 days, they are 80% down…

My site when down and I got an “off line can’t connect to database”; then my site when up and I now get a popup login box, asking me to log into (http://www.clearwind.nl). I took a look at the site and I assume you guys are using this site in Germany to bounce our databases. Some how, something is cross-connected..strange problem, really bizarree

HTTP seems fine to me, but SSH to ‘good’ seems really slow and then locks up completely.. anyone else have similar problem? Might be my end.

my site was down since around 9am EST. It has been intermittent, Slow in response.
Now (15:19 EST) its unaccessible.

I’m on nitti too. Unfortunately I hosts source code there via SVN (one of the reasons I picked Dreamhost) and my team is really stuck without SVN access.

The thing that bothers me the most is that the Dreamhost team doesn’t update the status page (or the RSS status feeds for that matter). I’d feel a lot less frustrated with it if I knew for sure that they were aware of the problem and were working on it. I don’t feel I can trust the server status pages.

Dreamhost team,

Is it a Hardware issue? OS issue? application issue or environmental issue ?

whats is the problem, how long does it take to restore service?

give us the status so that we dont need to keep checking for status

Please

C’mon, you have this entire website dedicated to the status of your services and yet you don’t keep it updated like it should be.

Dreamhost should take a page out of Amazon’s book. http://status.aws.amazon.com/ It’s a nice simple page. If there is a problem, the admins immediately report it and what they are doing to fix it. They provide updates on the problem stating whether or not they know what’s wrong, what they are doing about it, or when their clients can expect the service to be restored. They report nearly on an hourly basis until the problem is resolved.

Even if reporting more frequently means that it takes longer to resolve the actual problem, it would likely satisfy many customers just by keeping them informed.

Now my site is UP

Thanks

Is this restored ?? or is still under repair??

Dreamhost is fast, easy but not use wordpress.
cpu error

Fidget out as well, but not listed… ticket already submitted.. Down 3 hours now…

Come on… Seriously?

i just installed a wordpress site and it’s really really slow. I have the same exact site running on a different host and it works 2x as fast. I kinda am not digging dreamhost right now, but hopefully it’s a server issue and it will speed up.

hey mike @45 your not alone, i’m on dribbler too. the service has been off and on throughout the day, yesterday too.

On cupid, been down for 3 days now. Sent at least 4 messages to support and they said they would put my site at the “top of the list” for repair. That was over a day ago…

Escobar is down right now and this isn’t the first time this week. But this downtime is never mentioned/listed on the blog. I don’t want to waste DH’s time calling/asking them about it, but when it isn’t mentioned at all it makes me wonder if the downtime is normal and/or if they are aware of it. D=
