Server Moves for Spunky Cluster!
Posted (September 10th, 2009 at 3:32 pm PST) by micahWe are currently working to move customers from our no-longer-scaling NFS based hosting servers, to our local storage servers. This move is all done behind the scenes by copying (and recopying) and checking (and rechecking) each customer’s data and then updating the users and domains in our databases.
There should be very little if any fallout from this process unless you happen to be hosting your DNS elsewhere. If you do have external DNS for any of your domains, you can contact support to find out your new IP so you can update your records OR you can lookup your DNS via our control panel yourself by going to menu option (DOMAINS > MANAGE DOMAINS) and clicking on the “DNS” link for the domain in question. You should receive an email when the move is complete. To reiterate, this affects customers in the spunky cluster only, other clusters will be migrated later.
Also, this move entails an upgrade from Debian 3.1 (sarge) to Debian 4.0 (etch) which means quite a few pieces of software your site may rely on will be upgraded as well. Any custom compiled software will likely need to be recompiled as well due to the change in OS (and architecture). If you encounter any problems or have any questions please contact our support team!

Down for me now.
Would this explain why my FTP refused to let me log in for about an hour earlier today? I’m on spunky… Heh.
Ooo Trialia is that hooker from Firefly
NFS has always irritated me because SQLite doesn’t work well with it, so: hooray!
Wonder if the easy-install apps like Joomla hardcoded their server name into their configs.
I had trouble uploading a file in a joomla install yesterday and it was because of the internal path being wrong, not sure if I’d ever put a /.path/ in a URL myself, so I think it was done automatically by either joomla or easy-install(whatever they are called).
They send out an email before they do your server with an approximate timeline. I got moved last week, I double checked everything mentioned in the email and everything went smoothly. Got an email when the move was complete otherwise I wouldn’t have even known it happened..
I didn’t receive an email and I still am working on fixing things. Too many sites…too little time!
I’d love to have more notice. And I’d loved to have known that we’d be changing PHP versions…
No notice was sent out before my server move.
Went to my website and everything was broken due to new server paths.
Thank you… Very good text
Teşekkürler arkadaşlar güzel bir site…
Also ssh keys changed, so you’ll get errors when scp or ssh’ing.
Pligg users must delete all template cache (all inside templates_c)
If you installed ioncube with the script dh-phpion.php must edit php.ini in cgi-bin.
Mine still down too.
Make sure to check all your websites. One of mine was completely deleted. Also check ssh with -v or not quiet. I had mine set to quiet and didn’t notice the changed server error.
find it funny that people are complaining about their server paths being broken. who taught you retards how to code?
Is anyone else unable to access their panel? I get nothing when I visit https://panel.dreamhost.com – just ‘the website is encountering problems’ errors.
All my Dreamhost sites are also down, but I can’t get into the panel to check whether I’m on spunky!
rico: Many people are just mommy bloggers.
Don’t be so quick to judge. Dreamhost just deleted my site – again! This time, they decided to delete all my .ssh directories for good measure.
Mine still down
I guess it is MacFUSE and not Dreamhost that keeps deleting my site.
I was caught off guard when I noticed that the mail server had changed and my mail for all accounts was bouncing back to sender.
It was nice of you to mention the issue about external MX records here. But for those of us who don’t religiously follow the status blog, it would have been really nice to simply EMAIL us once BEFORE the switch. The after-the-fact mail proves you know exactly who needed to be contacted.
I changed my external MX records and now I am waiting for the changes to percolate and hopefully everything to work. In the mean time, all mails are being bounced back to sender.
This is one of those “wouldn’t be very hard for DreamHost to handle this a lot more respectfully” situations.
I got this 8/28, webserver move happened 9/7 (mysql databases moved a few days prior).

Hey Joe!
This is just a note to let you know that we’re about to move your account
to a new server in as soon as 72 hours (it may be later, but be prepared)!
We apologize for the lack of further notice, but this was an emergency
move as a perfomance and stability measure.
What does this mean to you?
* Hopefully nothing!
* However, you should make sure you are using only your FULL EMAIL ADDRESS
to check/send email (and not something like m#######), and that your mail
servers (incoming and outgoing) are all set to just mail.yourdomain.com
(and nothing with “dreamhost.com” in it!)
* You should also check any configuration files you have for your websites
to make sure they don’t don’t have anything like “/home/.SOMETHING/username”
in them. Instead, it should just be “/home/username”.
IMPORTANT:
* If you are using your server name (server.dreamhost.com) as your FTP
hostname, be sure to change that to your domain name. The domain name
will _always_ point to the correct server in the event that it is changed
in the future.
And for advanced users:
* If you set up a custom .procmailrc (filtering) or .forward (forwarding)
file, you NEED to go to our panel’s “Mail” section and from there mimic
whatever functionality you need. You can set up forwarding, filtering,
whitelists, blacklists, and even sending emails to a script for further
processing, all from our interface!
Please let us know if there’s something you are doing that you don’t
seem to be able to recreate from our panel and we’ll make it doable ASAP!
* If you’re one of the few people who don’t use us for DNS, you’ll
need to update all your records yourself after you’re moved, we can’t do
it for you!
* If you built your own custom PHP (or php.ini), you’ll have to rebuild
it after you’re moved, since you’re moving to a 64bit machine!
That’s it really.. and again, we really apologize for the abrupt nature
of this move! To try and make up for it a bit, we’ll also set your
account to now have unlimited disk and bandwidth, forever!
Thanks!
The Happy DreamHost Moving Team
I can’t access my email!
I’m trying to login to https://webmail.dreamhost.com to check the email address that I put above in this form.
I get this message:
ERROR
Unknown user or password incorrect.
DreamHost please help meeee!!

“But for those of us who don’t religiously follow the status blog, it would have been really nice to simply EMAIL us once BEFORE the switch”
While I agree that DreamHost should be sure to email everyone, if you are a DreamHost customer you really should subscribe to the RSS feeds for your account – these are found under Account Status in the control panel. Email is much less reliable than simple RSS, and if DreamHost happens to have an issue the same time as your email provider (like the HUGE gmail outage recently) you are screwed.
Funny, I was on the Spunky cluster when I first signed up a few years ago. That’s back when there were a string of network issues for like a month. Since then moved to a private server. Been happy ever since.
Steven: I disagree.
WHAT IS GOING ON? STILL DOWN!!!
Redbeard: Your site is loading fine. You have an SQL error… what error is it?
I dont know?
ooook
Readbeard, if you used DreamHost Apps, visit the DreamHost Discussion board and post in the DreamHost Apps forum. Support is more likely to know you are having a problem that way and the DreamHost Apps panel has a contact form as well.
Big problems. Database disappear for stupidcompetitions.com
during navigation, we can’t see uploaded files on our ftps
we need support

Just had an email saying:
“Hey Karl!
This is just a note to let you know that we’ve moved your email accounts to a new servers!
We apologize for the lack of notice, but this move was necessary to insure stability and increase the performance of your mail service.”
Only knew about it because I checked on here why Thunderbird wasn’t picking up mail from half a dozen email accounts and domains, where as my BlackBerry was doing…
The reason: I set the IMAP & SMTP servers to mail.mydomain.com on my BlackBerry. However I had to set them to spunky.mail.dreamhost.com on Thunderbird because every time I loaded up, Thunderbird complained about the invalid SSL Certificate.
Have now changed the servers in Thunderbird, but already getting frustrated at having to confirm the SSL every time.
Actually… Looks like it’s about time I migrate everything over to Google Mail.
Maybe this is why they’re doing it – to ease the load on the DH servers 😉
1) No announcement to accounts using this cluster was made
2) It seems the ‘old’ version remained available if the domain used an external DNS server
3) I seem to have lost a week worth of data (wiki/svn) due to point 2

What a joke.
