Major System-Wide Outage (RESOLVED)

Posted (April 30th, 2011 at 2:37 pm PST) by Josh

We are investigating the cause and will update this post as soon as we know more.

Update 2:54pm PST: One of our network providers is having issues right now. Our network admins are working on moving all traffic to our two other service providers. We will keep updating this post as soon as we have more information. -Oscar

Update 3:10pm PST: We are having issues with one of our transit links to our LAX datacenter, our network administrators are investigating the issue and we hope to have it resolved as soon as humanly possible. This is causing problems with both external and internal networking – we’ll update this post as soon as we have more information or the issue is resolved. -John

Update 3:30pm PST: Our network engineers are on site at the source of the issue and working on resolving it. More information to follow as it becomes available. -John

Update 3:50pm PST: We are still working feverishly to resolve this issue – some portions of our network are responding better now but there’s more work to be done. -John

Update 4:10pm PST: We are seeing improvement but are still working on this issue. -John

Update 4:40pm PST: Our network engineers rebooted the core router at our LAX facilities but our providers are still flapping. It appears that the LAX facility may be stabilized but we’re experiencing high load on our core routers as a result of all the BGP flapping. We are still investigating the issue but current traffic patterns possibly indicate an attack on our network. -John

Update 5:00pm PST: We are still working to defeat this attack on our network. Nullifying certain source IPs has seemed to help matters, but that attack vectors and profiles are still being introduced and identified. -John

Update 5:25pm PST: Some attacks have been blocked that were inbound and we have identified some that were outbound and blocked those as well. We’re still working on the matter and the network responsiveness is improving but the attacks are still causing BGP flapping. -John

Update 5:50pm PST: We’ve pinned down the sources and nature of the attacks and are in the process of scanning for more attack software as well as filtering bad traffic at the core routers. The issue is not completely resolved yet but we’re making good progress now. More updates to follow. -John

Update 6:15pm PST: In a nutshell we suffered an extremely sophisticated attack. It took a while to get things under control enough to see what was going on and then start not only blocking attack vectors but track down and disable software being used to launch attacks from our network as well. Things are almost under control currently and once they are we’ll get a full and detailed report from our network engineers for you. -John

Update 6:35pm PST: Good news – all inbound attacks appear to now be screened and the CPU levels on our networking equipment is currently stable. We’ve strengthened our defenses at all levels of our network as well – borders are hardened, cores are protected, transit interfaces are stable. That said, we’re remaining vigilant as these attacks are much more advanced than what we’ve seen previously. -John

Update 6:50pm PST: All indications are that everything is under control so we are marking this matter as resolved. We will still provide details on what happened as soon as we’re able to do so. -John

Update 7:12pm PST: It’s back.. we’re on it again.. more updates soon. -Josh

Update 7:31pm PST: It seems that we’re seeing issues with our transit links to our Alchemy datacenter. Our network engineers are working on the issue and we will update this as soon as we have more information. – Oscar

Update: 8:02pm PST: We are seeing some more interruptions in networking, our admins and network engineers are still looking into the issue. – Justin

Update: 8:25pm PST: Our abuse team is getting involved as well at this point. We have resolved issues on most of our routers, and have found over 500 compromised sites so far, that we are working on fixing. Overall things should improve over time. -Justin

Update: 8:53pm PST: Things once again seem to be resolved.. we’re going to be cautiously optimistic and say nobody should be seeing any network issues at this time. We’re still going through squashing bad guys here and there, but the system is now sound. We’ll update this post if anything changes. -Josh

Update: 9:14pm PST: I spoke too soon again.. we’re still on it. -Josh

Update 9:41pm PST: Okay, it seems like we were being attacked because of a site we host. We’re investigating, things should be mostly back to normal for nearly everybody but the attack continues.. -Josh

Update (May 1) 11:50pm PST: This issue is officially resolved.  Please contact Support with any questions!

Yup. Got an email notice from Pingdom about 2 mins bnefore this was posted. My webpanel is down — probably good since all I’d be doing with it is complaining to support. ;)

Aw, shoot. Just as I was uploading new pages and images too.

Megamart.

Megamart: Sam e here. That sucks!

Of course, I picked today to catch up on a bunch of of development work… :) Good luck guys, we’re counting on you!

Looks like it’s back up already?

Ah! Yep!

ah crap
sorry about yet another ticket!

panel and everything was fine, but i logged a ticket regarding a similar issue

sorry!

It was funny. I was posting and updating sites just fine. Then seconds later I tried to log in to access the FTP and boom everything had stopped working. Geesh.

System-wide what? Nothing wrong on my end…for a change.

Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

* Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
* Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
* Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

PORCO DIO CANE!!!

ERROR DATABASE CONNECTION all the time !!!

> Looks like it’s back up already?

Yes…..and no! :-)

I love how my luck has it that Dreamhost only goes down when I try to do something useful with it. Lol.

lol, down again.

Cigarette break :)

Yup. Down again.

ouagadougou is working, just not consistently…ssh hung, then I ssh’d back in, now it hangs and goes. Well, hanging now mostly…:-(

Here we go again!

It’s going up and down like mad. And I gave up a gorgeous day to try and catch up work. Dreamhost owes me WHISKY.

Site keeps on loading but to no avail

DB conn errs

All my sites down

I love DH “status what’s up” –> “status what’s down”

Looks like a Yo-Yo or Bouncing Ball Server… One moment it is UP and the next it is DOWN.

Hope it gets fixed :-)

Just lost a $10,000 business client, outage right when I’m explaining how uptime is indefinite.

Good job.

Amazing how the people have posted were not only able to see there was a major problem, but they all already had time to post to the notification that DH already provided. Damn, Josh, that was record time. I doubt the shiz was down for 10 minutes before you posted here. Lol… hope it’s not another Oracle promise out the window :-)

D’OH! I’m so busy today guys…please have it up soon!

Thanks as I know you’re working on it.. :)

@Rudy, haha I was noticing the same thing about people posting their db connection errors… duh!

One day it will all be up again.

April 30th, 2011 at 2:53 pmCurrentlyDumbfounded Says:

My server is up and down with cpanel… when ever that is not loading… neither is my site…

Amazing that the DreamHostStatus site never seems to go down?

Sorry guys, it was me. I clicked on the big red button in the control panel that says “DO NOT PRESS”.

@Dan, they host the status page off-site for that reason.

Hope to see this resolved ASAP, losing money here.

Holy cow, the DH admin panel is down too!

@PM – yeah, I think it’s their entire network. Maybe a router issue?

Thank you Sage :-)

Hey did DH pay the electricity bill to Fukushima?

@PM lol!

Why are there so many issues. Where is the redundancy and failovers? Every problem they post is raid problems and hardware issues. whatever brand hardware you are using, it’s to switch because clearly it’s no good. Everytime I want to catchup on work, there is a performance or server problem…guys/girls get it together, please…

akensai: good work spending $97 on a $10,000 client

Up again!?

Timing, just as i wanted to upload my files for a site

Everything is fine for me. My website is up. The DH panel is up for me as well.

site’s down wtf are the serves located in alabama?

DH, time to invest in your infrastructure with all our money – this is unacceptable!

Can’t access website, my blog or e-mail – nothing!

All my sites on Dreamhost are fine. Akismet seems to be affected by this too.

dreamhoststatus.com is not down because it’s hosted over at godaddy.
This sucs, lately dreamhost has more and more downtime, and it’s starting to affect google rankings…

Actually dreamhoststatus.com is hosted by DreamHost. Look it up at who.is

Comment to “Lost a $10K client”…

Set up another host as NS3, NS4, so when NS1 & NS2 on Host #1 bails, your clients go to Host#2.

Okay, now I understand, the servers are 8088 processor based, and some of them z80 sinclair with monochrome CRTs, running cp/m and 8 inch floppies. DH is now punching punchcards to program a bootstrap with assembler. Oh wait, wow, there is an Atari box as a backup! This is great. Now DH can run MS-DOS 1.0. No big deal, only 16k ram needed.

Hey DH, do some IPL please!

amaturehost.com is currently not in use, you guys really should grab that domain name as soon as you can.

@Matt : it was meant as a joke :).

The not so funny thing is that I can see in my webmaster account in the performance review of my website, exactly when dreamhost had outages.

To the guy who lost the $10k client: Maybe you shouldn’t be talking about what great uptime you have when your host is pretty well known for its uptime problems?

Thanks for the speedy post, DH! This was a very quick response. Hope everything gets sorted out soon.

@akensai

“Lost a $10K client”

Oh you did not…please, no exaggerated drama queening.

PM Uzer…

Do you mean that my Commodore PET 2000 (4K RAM and a tape drive) is about to fail as my corporate web server? Tee Hee?

See what happens when we can’t get our work done? We kibitz on the DH posting site.

April 30th, 2011 at 3:10 pmChristopher Baker Says:

@matt: for the record, whois does not contain hosting info. it contains contact info. DreamHost is the Registrar and name server, but obviously not the host, as it is not going down.

Is DH really based in some high schooler’s mother’s basement? I thought so.

The nose knows

OMG! I just lost a $100K client! Thanks Dreamhost!

@WeCraveGames :

What about nightmarehost.com

Help, call Gordon Ramsay and open Host Kitchen and start Hosting Nightmares episode 1

…but seriously… for the price I pay and the value I get… the odd outage here in there is acceptable. Keep up the great value.

dreamhoststatus.com (this site)has as its nameservers:
ns1.dreamhost.com
ns2.dreamhost.com
ns3.dreamhost.com

So… sumthin’ is workin’ there!

@Scott: True, for shared hosting at this price you can’t (and shouldn’t) expect 100% uptime.

I have a few VPS’s and a dedi with DH, those are all down, so spending $97 on $10,000 client, not exactly accurate, MAJOR SYSTEM OUTAGE effects everything, including the VPS’s and dedi’s.

Before you start trying to analyze someone else, maybe think about it first.

At some point DH was between the top 10 hosting providers, now they show up nowhere, they have bad reviews, and.. have a dreamhoststatus page filled with comments from webmasters which have nothing else to do…

Fun to watch outage with PingPlotter. Networks backing up and rerouting all over the place… ntt.net, abovenet, comcast, etc. all backed up.

Yeah for less than 100 bux a year my sites are more up than down and the db servers are upgraded from pentium-2 to pentium-3 machines with hard disks replacing floppy drives. Shmantastico!

Yeah no hate towards DH, used em off and on since 2001, I have multiple other hosts, 2 different boxes in Chicago and Texas, and with all this DreamHost has 10x faster support, less downtime, and generally better networking equipment. For me, this downtime costs me a bit of money, but the last time anything of mine went down was probably a year ago. VPS/Dedi with DH is pretty much 100% uptime with no hiccups, you can’t find that hardly anywhere else, and if you do the 2 or 3 times a data-center has problems it will take them a week to fix it, if you really get as much downtime as everyone states on shared, then pay the $15 for a VPS.

My website seems to be down now.

I first came aboard with Dreamhost in Oct, 08 and it was great. One year, barely a problem. I started a new blog in Aug, 09, got rid of the old one, and it’s been an endless series of outages since the beginning of 2010. I realize this a low-priced solution but I’m quickly approaching the point where I will consider paying more after my contract runs out in Aug, 11, as long as outages don’t turn as common as a woman menstrual period.

@David Quintero
Pay the $15 for a VPS, no downtime unless a major problem like this occurs. Not to mention the ability to run say, your own vent/mumble/IRCd/game server off of it (yes its possible and allowed http://akensai.com/source-server-with-dreamhost-ps/)

Ok well my site will probably keep going up and down for a while. Thanks for keeping us updated!

Down? Again? Is it me or there has been a lot of trouble with dreamhost in the past 3, 4 months: emails, web sites, they have been down quite a lot, no?

who cares about uptime anyway :) return visitors are for the birds!

@ akensai…define “major” LOL!

Well all i can say is that regardless of how much we pay we still pay it.

I have both shared clients and vps and i am at my desktop 6days a week and can say that DH has been down for long enough to refund 6months! very unstable.

Say what you want but the fact is we pay for a service and we should get it.

i have a list of brochure cms clients on another host and can count on one hand the down time over 6months. So much for DH being the ONE

I just lost a $100 million client and my virginity. Thanks DH!

i just lost my keys

Ibuprofen break.

PORCO DIO MALEDETTO IL MIO SITO DOWN DA DIVERSE ORE… ANDATEVENE A FANCULO, MI STO ROMPENDO IL CAZZO CON VOI DI DREAMHOST

You just got me away from the computer on a weekend. Time to step outside into the sunshine. Thanks, Dreamhost!

The server is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. — I TRIED ALL DAY

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection. — FUCK YOU TOO

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. — I’M NOT STUPID

Any updates on the server status?

Things are up and down with my site at the moment. Got an SVN server running on it and it got part way through a commit before Tortoise suddenly said “Server not responding”. Came here and found this lol =P

Hopefully it’ll be back up and running fully soon.

Site down… site dead…

Users are calling me. It is prime time and we’re down. Ya’ll need any pizza?

Lost virginity! I knew it was more serious than I thought with all that going up going down going on! With all this posting it DOES sort of fel like a gang… never mind.

We have just lost a 1 million usd client :(
Should have paid more than 15 usd a month …I know… :-p

Seriously-when is this thing going to be solved? This is the longest downtime we have had for 2-3 years now (>5min).

Any news????

I am so glad I stopped storing my porn at Dreamhost. For the last two hours, all of my stuff has been offline. It sounds like I’m lucky. I can’t imagine 8 hrs without porn. I’d rehydrate or something.

I wonna loose my virginity too!

I just lost a billion dollar client. I was making a deal with some Saudi Arabian King and was going to give me every thing.

By the way, my site is http://www.yankeesdaily.com I bet my site is better than every one’s site here. There’s not one site that’s better than mine. How you like me now?

Three system-wide outages in two months is pretty unacceptable. I hope that in lieu of just poking fun at this event in the next newsletter you do your customers a courtesy and give us all a free month of hosting.

This is an unacceptable number of system-wide downtime events for a service that has been in operation for as long as yours, with over 1 million domains, and with the user base that you have.

Thank you very much DH. I have been trying to legitimize my excuse for putting off weekend yardwork. But because my sites are down and I am unable to update them, I have no choice but to pull out the mower now. Dang it…

http://www.1Crown.net is still down.

I hope everything works out, DreamHost. Keep up the good work with everything and thanks for the continuous updates.

That’s a sign of true business ethics – I look forward to working with you all for a long time.

Cheers! :)

– Steven Suko

What a shame, I’d been thinking reliability had been fine lately. I think that was mainly because we recently got upgraded to a machine that has an internal disk instead of tape.

Anyway, when the system recovers, check out xbomber.co.uk.

What is wrong with DH? I have pingdom showing 97.1% uptime over the last year for my website… DO NOT host a website on DH that has any real purpose. Moving away as soon as its back online, especially after they held my domain for ransom.

I host a number of sites on my DH account, and since I started using DH back in September, this is the first issue that has affected me/my sites. When I compare that statement to the past three webhosts, I enjoy my time with DH.

@akensai, a $10000 client and you put it on sub-$100 shared hosting? get rackspace, 100% uptime

All this complaining–
its karma you know. We will we learn?

My operation is right in the middle of ripping apart biz site (files gone!) and down things go. OMG

Having said that: PLEEZE GET THIS THING FIXED! Money is flying out the window……

@Monty
Nobody cares. If you lost a client just because of this downtime, then the only one to blame is yourself cause’ you’re too dumb to think about “what ifs”, so just shut up and let them do their job.

ok, I lost it.

Nope. Still dead.

@Tim: That whooshing sound you heard was Monty’s excellent humor going over your head.

For the record, this is the second Big Outage Dreamhost has had while I’ve been with them, and both times not a one of my sites went down. Thanks for the great work, guys. We know you do your best. Love you.

Rachel the great? Are you kidding or what? That’s the name of your site?

No, that whooshing sound was me ejaculating all over my flat panel television screen.

Without my list of porn links, which I keep on Dreamhost, I can only find porn on cable.

Help me!

really? dreamhost is down almost every day, no joke. thumbs down.

I love DH…I think they do a outstanding job for next to nothing in price.

I have clients who are currently pissed about this outage, but hey…s**t happens. Does anyone seriously think that any negativity posted here is going to make DH work any harder to resolve the issue?

All web sites and/or services inevitably go down at some point or another, just get over it and be patient.

Just got notice one of my sites is down, checked and they are both down. Mail is bouncing too.

Am i one of the only ones that is not ok with this.?! With uptime numbers running 99.999999% this is not good. I just signed up about 3 weeks ago and I can say that I am already thinking of jumping ship. Their customer service is great and the panel is good, but I just cant have this kind of problems. Does anyone have any ideas that one would use to ensure this does not happen? Email neil.r.ecker@gmail.com

And wala we’re back.

rachelthegreat.com is one of my favorite porn sites.

buhbye nightmare host. hello rackspace! i been putting off a move for too long, but this is final straw. they talked me into upgrading to a full moon after the last outage and this is the thanks i get?

if you just have a vanity blog whatever, but if you’re trying to actually run a business i can no longer recommend this service.

Hello and thanks that I was wasting several sales on my site travel booking, http://www.mondoviaggi.eu.
I redeemed you ???????????????
Do you realize the damage they caused?
At least I hope you manage to solve the problem as soon as possible, while you … good job …. I do not just have to cry for the loss …

Please can this be fixed ASAP !!!!

What is going on dream host almost every other day you are having issues on some server somewhere which always seems to affect me on several sites of mine. Looks like I will be searching for a new host soon if things like this continue. Since I have several sites with you and all of which seem to be going down every single day on your end. I am about fed up with all the down time we have had this year alone.

Tim, your mother never taught you the meaning of irony? I feel sad for you (and your mother too of course).

PS. Did you really think that I lost a one million usd client on a non dedicated server on DH? (maybe I should have a talk with your father too then…).

Hey, the bright side is maybe dreamhost will have another iPad givaway for “Bury the dreamhost #fail”

Maybe this time they will actually give out iPads

This fucking BLOWS. i need to update posts GRRR

M2,

I’m checking that one out ASAP.

@Akensai

It seems the bloggers forgot about dreamhost having dedi’s now, don’t mind them. Sucks about the business deal, but its awesome that you aren’t actually blaming dreamhost, funny that all these kiddies are raged over it and your the only one that really lost anything.

Sites on different DH servers I have are up and snappy… at least right now.

This is why I use CloudFlare in front of my DreamHost shared hosting, so that even in the event of a DreamHost outage, CloudFlare can continue serving a cached version of my site. It’s pretty neat. Plus, in regular usage it serves as an accelerator and threat blocker.

I don’t care if my sites are up or down. My emotional state of mind about my sites does not change anything anyhow.

No offense to DH, I love you guys. But I know that the FANTASTIC that breeds new business value comes at a price even if it is few and far between.

As a small business owner, I am more than thrilled with my VPS mySQL and dedicated hosting servers. Keep up the great work DH!

DreamHost, why do you have comments turn on for this blog. It’s nothing but sarcasim and negativity. I admit the downtime is more frequent lately, but I don’t expect much more for $15 a month.

I love the comments on this blog, theres always something funny to read…

Why hasn’t Obama fixed this yet?

Nothing like having this happen hours before the end of the month quota. lol. I was reading all your posts… this shit is too funny…
I am going to go watch the new episode of Archer on Hulu… enjoy your day.

Damn, if this is an attack then this could carry on for hours, even days!

Has anyone else noticed the past year or two how hackers and scammers seemed to have stepped up a gear? Dunno, maybe it’s just me, but I’ve been feeling for a while like something *BIG* is looming on the horizon… Can’t quite put my finger on it, but whatever it is I can guarantee it won’t be good news for any of us =(

Um, you did see that EC2 was down for most of a day earlier this week…?

Side note: It’s bizarre that you’re a “Happy Dreamhost Customer” with all these outages. I accept for the price that we get shoddy service, but there’s no damn reason to be moronically happy about it.

I just lost a three trillion dollar deal! I was arranging to collect trillions from this rich Nigerian family when suddenly dreamhost went down again. *sigh* All your fault guys. All your fault.

IT’S THE HACKPOCALYPSE!

what happen? Did the server down? I couldn’t connect any of my website.

Dang, it happened to me while I was writing an article and poof, there went my edits. Ah well, at least this outage seemed somewhat brief *fingers crossed that it’s over*

Seems to be better now. Thanks DH

I was actually negotiating to sell the entire planet to a gang of intergalactic buggerers and I was in the process of updating my “you are all now slaves to Xinu” announcement website when poof! DH went down.

This outage cost me 50 QUADRILLION QUATLOOS!

DM,

How are you holding up? Do you need some gatorade? A transfusion?

I’m worried about you.

My server is totally inaccessible, it seems. No HTTP access, no FTP.

Hope DH wasn’t hosting Iranian anti-freedom websites that were the target of Anonymous group’s hacking.

All these unrelated posts about porn are not appropriate here, especially for us frustrated DH customers. I actually went to rachelthegreat.com based on a previous post hoping to at least pass the time away while waiting for DH to resolve their issues – and got disappointed there too!

Suddenly I’m up and running again. Hope there was no dangerous breach

2) During this stage, they have more than enough capacity to offer endless redundancy. Performance is not an issue

It’s really a disaster, I lost a lot of PVs and my ranking of alexa will drop a lot, and my AD,my us$….

Thanks DH… I’ve been w/ you for years and you’re still the best at keeping it real w/ informative status updates and general badassery. I appreciate your team’s hard work getting everything back online. Sorry your Saturday got ruined :(.

At least they didn’t have to keep feeding configuration data into a black hole this time.

Thanks for the good work guys

I never complain about DH, and the one time I do, it’s essentially not their fault. Good one!

My sites are all down again. :-(

Hey guys! Tough break on the attack. Glad you guys were able to get it resolved. The last post from John said that everything was taken care of and all indicators show everything is back to normal, but my sites are still down. Any thoughts?

down again here too. :( swamps of sadness.

And we’re down again…

My sites are down again in the last few minutes.

My ssh session just stopped responding one minute ago. All is dark.

Same here. It is all down.

I was up and functioning, but now I too am down again

I wish you guys used a commenting platform like Disqus so I could just “Like” Ralph’s comment instead of having to thank you on my own, but thanks for your hard work!

DOWN AGAIN…(tap, tap, tap)…oh, DH staff…hello….

Yep just read the good news and I’m down again too.

i would totally vote up Jimmy’s comment! hell yeah! in other news, i think my sites is be working again.

Team Deranged will be shortly be starting a fresh masturbate-a-thon, sponsored by Rachel the Great.

All those who wish to participate in a synchronized fashion should post here.

I’m still having problems! If stuff like this keeps happening their better get insurance for the customers. We are losing money here.

lol, was just about to post saying it’s gone down again, and there is already an acknowledgement of it.

Keep up the good work DH! Your speedy communications are much appreciated =)

Shit happens.

But thank you guys for solving the problem. I believe it was a really tough saturday afternoon for all of us.

Man, you people are a whiny bunch.
I’ve been with DH since 2004. thick n thin. Ups and downs.
Shit like this happens. Remember the Amazon servers last week and how many “major players” were dead in the water?
If you lost a [insert random thousand dollar amount here] client because of the down time…you should be savvy enough to tell them that there is NO such thing as 100% uptime.

Suck it up, you fraking crybabies.

5 of my sites are down currently at time of writing, diagnostics reported no problems, looks like the attack is back on :/

I came to DH years ago after unhappy experiences with other well-known hosts over the years. I’ve also been a DBA as well as IT Director.
The DH staff is doing a great job on this as they always do.
This outage and attack is not their doing and out of their direct control. They can only react as quickly as possible – and have. And they have kept us all in the loop.
This has been a bad week – Sony, Amazon, etc. Stuff happens.

I applaud DH for their swift action and intelligent response!

@Henry Latourrette my saturday was pretty tough too. i pulled weeds in my landscaping, mowed my lawn, then i drank a tall glass of grape juice and fell asleep on my porch.

I’ve got three domains hosted through DreamHost, all of which are currently inaccessible. I’m not convinced that “resolved” is a good status for this server issue.

I agree dreamhost are great, moved to them from nodaddy, from the very start my ftp would not work without timing out.. always came back saying no problems, then they discovered a problem that might take months to fix.
I saw this dreamhost status site while looking for a new host and was impressed with the communications, if anything goes wrong its always posted here, and I never have to wait more than half an hour for support, and live chat has always been instant!
Really cant fault DH, every other company could learn a few lessons from them :)

My website is still not loading. It is definately NOT Resolved. This is not good.

Nope amy sunlakes not working for me either (uk)

I appreciate the hard work ditto what ralph said it’s a sucky way to spend the weekend. I also appreciate the frequent updates even if it’s just “we’re still working on it” silence can be unnerving thanks again guys (and gals).

I am just curious. What other good hosts have you guys tried? I am talking about VPS and dedicated…. Media Temple does not offer managed hosting. VPS.net sounds very intriguing but I hear their support is slow.

I agree with several posts above. DH support team is awesome.

April 30th, 2011 at 7:50 pmM of Australia Says:

@akensai…..you really are stupid for using DH for such an important client. If you read through the status blog, there are more than a handful of troublesome issues. If you know anything about networks, you could even see that DH apparently didn’t test their VSS architecture properly, hence the massive outage about a month ago. I work for an ISP implementing this, and I can assure you that this is one of the most parts of testing. Don’t blame it on Cisco…..they never document anything properly.

I personally use DH because I can pay next to nothing to host non-critical sites and their service level is satisfactory for what I need. For my important stuff, I use an Australian hosting company, WebCity. In the 4 years I have been with them, I have had 1 outage due to scheduled maintaince. FYI I pay ~$100USD for that.

For anyone at DH using this, why isn’t your traffic balanced across your gateways. For someone as big as yourselves, I would think that you would have more than half a dozen different internet providers and you should easily be able to shape traffic around a problem with one provider.

“If you lost a [insert random thousand dollar amount here] client because of the down time…you should be savvy enough to tell them that there is NO such thing as 100% uptime.”

YOU try telling that to the international buggerers I was selling Earth to!

Guess what? I found out that because our deal didn’t go through, they are going to bugger ME six billion times to make up for it.

I’ll try to get the video up on rachelthegreat.com

As much as i am unhappy about the downtime for my sites, i have to say that their support is just great. Thanks for keeping us updated and hope all issues will be fixed soon. Regards, Hamed

Mine still won’t load.

Who’s attacking the network. Tell us so we can find them and break their face.

1. “have found over 500 compromised sites so far” – What does that mean exactly?

2> “Overall things should improve over time.” – ummmm… ok? :-)

“…and have found over 500 compromised sites so far”… um… compromised how? Should I be worried?

I hope they’ll be contacting those with compromised sites so that the owners of them know what happened. I’ve seen some silly little exploits being run against my WordPress sites in the last couple of months. These would only have worked against ancient versions of WP, though.

Sites are loading now, but very slowly.

DH is good for the price. I put mission critical stuff on Linode at the moment. Hit me up for a referral code if interested.

yay nice work DH, my site is loading now.

Interesting, Kurotsuki…what’s in the black-out “all because of …” part?

@Huh The site I am a moderator of, which he has a qualm with. This guy has no problem dropping thousands of users and customers to settle an argument. We’ll probably be kicked off anyway in short time, when Dreamhost realizes we were the target.

Time to see if DreamHost negotiates with terrorists.

Thanks a bunch for all your hard work!! I’m back up and running (so far). Only about 35 minutes of down time!!!

What is his beef with you guys? Is it worth him going to jail over?

@L.S. A friend of his has a site in competition. That’s basically it. Stupid reasons, yeah, but I doubt he’s stupid enough to be found.

Kurotsuki,

What is your site?

@Huh Sorry, no. All I’ll say is it’s a relatively innocuous discussion forum of sorts. Certainly nothing that would warrant this kind of response.

OK why attack the entire network? Why take down an entire webhost for hours? What reason would someone have for doing this? What did the customers of dreamhost do to whoever’s behind this and what are their reasons for attacking a web hosts entire network? I’m not a customer myself, but have friends that are, and this is crap I say! I hope for the sake of the customers we can get a detailed report and find out who and what is behind this nonsense! If you have a beef with one person, why take down everyone else too? Hope this idiot is found!

Kurotsuki, let me suggest Cloudflare for the site. They’ve been excellent so far for keeping my sites up and visible in the face of server outages and attacks. It’s completely free and the only thing you have to change is the DNS info to put them between the internet and the actual host.

April 30th, 2011 at 9:56 pmWhoNeedsSleepAnyway Says:

@DH
A legal lesson.

@WhoNeedsSleepAnyway,

I found out about it after providing some MX entries for Project Honeypot. I like CF’s approach to content delivery and caching – and, when DH was down for that cisco maintenance not long ago, my site was still visible (just not as interactive, no comment posting and such).

For a free service, it’s treated me remarkably well. Hope you enjoy it.

JSYK, this is not an attack by anonymous, so don’t freak out, it is as above, just a really childish rivalry dispute caused by some of Kurotsuki’s friends DDoSing some of Ryan’s friends mail servers :)

It’s absolutely incredible that some stupid rivalry could be responsible for a major web host outage.

The attackers, on both sides, need their freekin heads kicked in. Fortunately I lost nothing by this outage, however others did, and it’s not fair that they should suffer because someone decided to attack 1 site.

@Nishikawa Hi Ryan and/or NekoArc

We didn’t DDoS anything. It seems some of our users posted ads on the other site, which I suppose pissed them off. Not that it matters in the first place; even if we had done something rash, their method of retribution is unacceptable.

I should probably bow out. We’ll likely be dealing with DreamHost staff soon. Whether they want to negotiate with terrorists or not, if this continues on they’ll have little choice but to drop us for the sake of all the other customers who were damaged. Sorry for the trouble.

So what site was the target, and what site was the attacker? I had three of my sites go down for hours, not to mention my clients’ sites. I think the least you can do is tell us what it was about.

@bblackmoor
4chon.net (the DH hosted site) had been spamming various other message boards in an attempt to grow their userbase, under the lame excuse of ‘ur inactive compare to us’, and apparently the people being continually spammed got tired.

From what it looks like, Kurotsuki is trying get people to attack another site because he was involved with spamming and attacking it himself

Teh lulz.

Shoulda known it was ED, whatever you did you deserve it, Ryan doesn’t attack unless he’s pissed, and you can’t stop is 3 million zombie net, nobody can.

Drop 4chon.net, remove the user from his hosting and charge a damages fee, he provoked attack and he got it.

http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/5131/4chonnetspam.png

this image clearly shows a 4chon.net thread (which I believe still exists, Dreamhost staff should attempt to find it before they delete it) in which they discuss spaming.

Their target, among others ?

4chan.

BRILLIANT!

So who is doing this? Your “anonymous” we are legion followers?

@Chris Poole
Actually, for the most part, those banners were for the site itself, not 4chan. You never see the staff encouraging spam or advertisements either.

@lolin

All I know is that Sherrod said to do it.

There will be retaliation, that is furshure. They are going to be pissed.

Please don’t let this comments section turn into a back-and-forth flame war.

@lolin

If the people doing this are bad enough dudes to just squash a host to get a single site, I think their response would be ‘come at me bro’.

I don’t speak for 4chon. I don’t even know what the situation behind these attacks is.

@lolin

Then read my previous comments. It’s because the site on DH (4chon.net) kept spaming other sites populated by hackers on steriods and other internet superheroes.

4chon.net was spamming other sites, i had to deal with the spamm flood on a few sites, 3000 requests in 2 hours, then when i set up the block, it got 200 of them in 10 minutes

i knew there was a attack on 4chon.net, but meh, im not involved but i think it was a smart move, they will not do it again

For everyone saying move to Rackspace I would be careful. They couldn’t handle draft day for an NFL fan forum. There are tons of good hosts out there, go find them.

I understand that they spam, but why take down the host? that effects tons of other innocent websites.

@Zane

I dont think, outside of spending serious cash that a white supremacist forum lacks, 4chon.net could find a host willing to tolerate their normal content AND provide denial of service protection.

Especily for a site dumb enough to piss off people who just take the whole host down without breaking a sweat.

Kurotsuki does not have the ability to control the users from spamming other sites. I don’t understand how his site is considered a threat compared to previous sites that had spammed 4chan, but I’m guessing it has something to do with his userbase.

The attack isn’t directly aimed at him as much as the users provoking it.

I’m moving to BlazeForce, this downtime is killing my sites!

John Doe
if you look on archives.4chon.org/news.php and scroll down a bit, you’ll notice that there’s at least one instance of Kurotsuki (aka savetheinternet) that actually helped spam on a site

You can read about the teenage girls (4chon.net, 4chon.org, etc.) here:

http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/4chon.net

@nig- It must be unusual to have an admin advocate spam, let alone spam his own site.

@nig- Is that conversation from the users or from the admin himself?

Hi, I am the administrator of 4chon.net.

Please, ignore everything that has been said above. It’s all lies.

4chon.net staff have NEVER advocated or encouraged spamming or advertising, and we actually have had a notice up on the site asking users specifically not spam. We have never been behind any DDoS (or anything of that sort) attacks. There’s been claims that I’ve been “spamming” ED. I have not ever created an account on this new ED. Note that most of the stuff on that ED article is false too, and those chat logs are highly redacted.

The attack was, for the most part, a misunderstanding, and I sincerely apologize to all it has affected. 4chon.net has never provoked any sort of attack, and I don’t think we deserved something of this nature.

Again, I am sorry to all it’s affected.

@Savetheinternet – nice lies.

What the hell, STI? Your moderators were blaming the Jewish Internet Defence Force for this DDOS. You never said anything about your users constantly spamming links to that white supremacist shithole you call 4chon.net on other sites.

I hope you and your racist friends get kicked off from Dreamhost for spreading your hateful ideolgy among the Internet and causing so many innocent people to get hurt just because you couldn’t make amends with this hacker.

so you’re saying these irc logs are fake too?
http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/User:NekoArc/IRC_logs

there was evidence posted of sti admitting to spamming in links provided earlier and there’s complete chat logs of him doing it. quit trying to cover your sorry butt

@Claude
>What the hell, STI? Your moderators were blaming the Jewish Internet Defence Force for this DDOS.
Huh? Where? When? The “JIDF” is a commonly known joke around 4chon.net, and you shouldn’t take anything you read there as serious.

>You never said anything about your users constantly spamming links to that white supremacist shithole you call 4chon.net on other sites.
Not true.

>I hope you and your racist friends get kicked off from Dreamhost for spreading your hateful ideolgy among the Internet and causing so many innocent people to get hurt just because you couldn’t make amends with this hacker.
It’s not my fault at all. And kicking a site off because it’s “racist” is just plain stupid. In every community, you will find some strange people; you cannot blame the administrator for the content posted by his users.

I wrote a bit about this at http://status.4chon.net/

@Lorf
I never said that the logs were fake. I said they were redacted.

I admitted to posting one image on 4chon.org at the very start of 4chon.net, and I apologized for that months ago.

got any logs to show that then?

quote nig- …’he wanted us to leave so we left’

This is the line that I’m questioning because- I’m making an educated guess here- 4chon.net is hosting two boards that were previously deleted from the 4chan community. If the users were upset enough, they would relocate to another site rather than merge with other boards. How the communities manage to communicate with the lost userbase would be by advertising the site to the only place (and possibly many similar places) in which the lost users would be located. This would give them a reason to spam the mother site, aka- 4chan.

Now, if we were to take STI into consideration, he could be putting up the site for the users or for himself. But no one can predict the future. He could have bad intentions, but then again, the situation is unclear as to who started provoking what.

Get your drama out of here already. I think I speak for most all Dreamhost customers when I say that we do not want to hear a lick of it.

STI, don’t bullshit me, please. Mods on /new/ and /meta/ both said it was a JIDF attack. No one said anything about alleged spamming of links even though I always saw threads telling people to use image macros and banners to advertise on other sites.

You said in the rules never to do this, but not once have I seen anyone banned for encouraging raids or spam.

You know why moot killed /new/, STI? Because he knew that it was infested with white supremacists. People that resort to violence and illegal activities to spread their beliefs and he wanted nothing to do with them. So why do you keep them on your site, STI? Why do you let them organize and continue their nonsense?

“We might soon get kicked off DreamHost because of the damage.”

We can only hope. Besides, you need to focus on your studies if you ever hope to get into a good high school.

@SW
I completely agree with you. While I personally had nothing to lose by this outage except the trickle of web traffic and search engine spiders I’ve been getting, hearing the back and forth he said she said BS, combined with the apparently petty reasons for why dreamhost was attacked, is starting to tick me off more than the outage itself.

@Claude
>STI, don’t bullshit me, please. Mods on /new/ and /meta/ both said it was a JIDF attack.
Yes. As I said, it’s a joke. Most communities have their own types of humor.

>No one said anything about alleged spamming of links even though I always saw threads telling people to use image macros and banners to advertise on other sites.
Image macros? Look, I can’t control all of my users, and neither can my moderators, but we do what we can. We ask people not to spam, but of course, as with any community, there is going to be some promotion carried out by the users. Name an imageboard that has not been advertised elsewhere. Actually, no. Name a popular website that has not ever been promoted by its users.

>You said in the rules never to do this, but not once have I seen anyone banned for encouraging raids or spam.
Only a very small minority of bans are public. There have actually been plenty of bans given for encouraging raid or spamming.

>You know why moot killed /new/, STI? Because he knew that it was infested with white supremacists. People that resort to violence and illegal activities to spread their beliefs and he wanted nothing to do with them. So why do you keep them on your site, STI? Why do you let them organize and continue their nonsense?
That’s your personal opinion and I don’t agree with it, sorry.

Please take the crappy childhood arguments elsewhere, nothing will be resolved by these. They do show one thing however, that is, the maturity level of those involved.

Good day sirs :)

Buh-bye, you 4chon.net idiots.

@SW- Agreed.

Yeplike.com is UP!

are you ignoring me STI, or do you not have any logs showing that you supposedly apologized?

really? There should be a maturity test before being allowed access to the internet… or a kiddie box for the children to play in. Some of us have real work to do. The high-schooler who started this should go to jail for a few years.

Well, whatever.

It looks like your little hate site won’t exist for very long thanks to the efforts of this “Ryan” fellow.

Oh, and if you weren’t so selfish, you would have made a deal with him, instead of endangering so many innocent people.

If anyone is reading this, please note that 4chon.net is an actual hate site, which advocates anti-semitism, racism and violence against minority groups.

@Lorf
I already replied to you.

@Claude
It’s not a “hate” site. Stop being so ignorant, please.

Doesn’t matter, I’m bailing out on Dreamhost.

They negotiated with terrorists.

We have backup VPSs at Hostgator and I guess that “significant provider” is willing to host us.

The above “Savetheinternet” is an impostor.

>It’s not a “hate” site. Stop being so ignorant, please.

Judging by the wiki your users made, it does seem very much like a hate site.

STFU, Claude and go back to Jewselam.

Claude, there’s a difference between a site being there for the purpose of hate (A hate site) and a site that just let’s it be there.

STI LET’S it be there, the hate just came with the /news/ board. Why should he have to get rid of said hate?

These comments are ALMOST as entertaining as YouTube. Almost.

STI, so where’s the logs of you apologizing?

So my sites were down because of a pathetic argument between two small minded groups of people with nothing better to do than hate? Marvellous. Correct me if I’m wrong, otherwise gtfu. Peace.

@A

Almost. The one being attacked has done nothing to instigate an attack. Its an argument, but only one party is arguing.

But what is the main web site attacked?… I love to read a detailed explanation of all this when you close the issue… I have great curiosity about this case

Regardless of all, congratulations to the DH team for their good work.

A happy DH costumer with his 15 sites working

4chon.net user here since its beginning.

Firstly, The site is not a white supremecist website, this is simply lies.
One of the boards on the site, is a board for politcal and philosphical discussion, and yes, there is white supremecist talk on there, but there is also opposing views, and a lot of the boards users are not even white, one of the mods is black for example, the board is just a poltical discussion with no limits on free speech, you cant take it down because some users say things some people find offensive, and you can go on there and say your views if you want, its not a white supremecist circle jerk or there wouldnt be so many debates. You really want to bring a site down because people are allowed to speak their minds? Oh and theres not a single organisted attack or anything, there isnt enough agreement among the users to organise that in the first place and it would be banned instantly anyway.
Anyway that is just one section of the website.

The rest of the site is for general discussion, discussion of video games, and a board for feedback and talk about the site, which the mods and admin actively respond to.

The accusations of the DDOS attacks being from the Jewish internet defense force is just a running gag on that part of the website, its a joke, a previous attack contained israel Ips and so the joke came up, no one seriously believes it.

The accusations of spam on other websites i cannot fully comment on, but i can tell you this.
Any one who plans to advertise or spam websites gets a ban, advocating this results in a ban, however, the users have advertised the site at certain times, for example, our boards are the deleted boards from 4chan, sometimes people say they miss those boards, so we tell them about it, but we do not constantly spam, and i realise this advertising may still be deemed as wrong, and many users are against it, and advocating it results in a ban, i myself recieved a few hour ban for saying i told some one on 4chan about the site.
So yes, spam and advertisement is not permitted.
We have more than enough users, the banner thing was from the beginning when we were small and wanted more users, but we did not spam.
However, about the IRC chats and apparent other spams, i cannot comment other than i know that i and pretty much all the other users dont even know what this is and have not even heard of it before, furthermore there is a lot of editted chat logs, as we have evidence of the actual ones and the editted ones, but whether they are all like this i cant say.

Anyway, for whatever we apparently did wrong to these other websites, they are attacking the host, which affects hundreds of other websites, this is simply immoral and 4chon.net cannot be blame for this, a petty dispute over 2 websites and they attack the host? ridiculous.

Its just immature childish behaviour and they should stop it immediatly, their quarrel is with 4chon.net, not the host and all its users. And the fact that 4chon.net is the one being victimised for the actions of other people causing the attacks is ridiculous.

Hopefully that cleared up some misconceptions about the site being a white supremecist forum and spamming website, which is pretty much made up. The site is a great site and the users do not want to lose it.

yo dreamhost can you not host racist nerds in the future. thanks in advance

Just thought I’d let the kindly folks here know, that the guys attacking you have a website that hosts child pornography.
http://hal.4chon.org/jb/
And also, that the other culprits, encyclopediadramatica.ch, host a number of racist, sexist, bigoted pages, and also have played host to attacks against minors, the elderly, and the sick.
Here is a link to the host of the offending group.
http://www.he.net/
You can contact their host and ask them to take action, if so desired.

Honestly, I don’t give much of a sh*t about this drama but I really wonder what happened to those 500 compromised sites. Compromised how? credentials? website data? whole data? ftp/ssh access?

Internet drama. DRA-MA.

At least all I’m doing is jerking off.

I appreciate the response from Net User. I may be in the minority here, but here is my opinion:

1) It doesn’t matter what the content of the attacked site was. “I love kittens”, “I hate Albanians”, whatever. I don’t care, and I don’t think it’s relevant.

2) If someone attacked Dreamhost, the person/people responsible for that are the people who did the attack. Period.

3) If a Dreamhost customer used Dreamhost resources to send spam, they should be warned, and they should stop. If they continue to send spam, and that can be proven, their account should be cancelled.

4) If a Dreamhost customer *deliberately* antagonized someone, they should probably not do that again.

This is a quote from the Person responsible for the Attack on dreamhost.
They are mad at 4chon.net, so they attack dreamhost and all its users. It is them who have now “poked a sleeping bear”

This picture is a prime example of the kinda of racist homophobic spam 4chon.net is known for.

And this is what kind of terrible anti-semantic things that are posted on ED: http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/Jews

@William Taft Snacks Says:

That website is the one doing the attack, are you really going to believe them?

Oh and if you think it deserves being attacks for containing some racism and homophobia well then you should take down youtube and the whole rest of the internet.

Stupid enemies of free speech, who cares whats on 4chon.net, these other guys are downing everyones websites.

Because jews are dirty.

Thought it was the May 20th cartoon thing just early this year…

The real irony is that when encyclopediadramatica was on a .com domain (and when the majority of the offensive content on the site was written) dreamhost was the hosting company it used.

Ryan Cleary should prepare his anus.

I highly suspect the people attacking 4chon here are the ones doing the attack.

Theyre simply jealous of our website.

We are 4chon.net
Theyre 4chon.org

Our site gets thosuands of posts a day and theirs gets about 10.

All the ever do is bring crap onto our website accusing us of spamming them, then they just attack us a few times, and now they do this huge attack.

This drama is retarded. 4chon.net is the victim of the attacker who is attacking the host which affects everyone, the attacker is the back person, not the website the attack is aimed at.

The WaffenSS is onto retaliation in the name of 4chon.

The perpetrator’s name is Ryan Cleary. He lives at the following address:

Facebook: facebook.com/ryan.cleary2

What the attackers dont seem to realise is that 4chon.net has left dreamhost now and yet they are still attacking, disabling everyone elses websites.

Yea, not to point names but the attackers are 4chon.org and encyclopediadramatica.ch

Net User is a liar, plain and simple.

4chan.org has been arround for years.

4chan.net (the dreamhost user) was made early this year in an attempt to copy the name of a pre-existing site and misdirect users there.

Im not a staff member im just pissed off that my favourite forum is being attacked and more pissed off that its being blamed for it

@William Taft Snacks

I didnt say it had’nt been around for years did i?

4chon.net didnt copy the name, but once created realised there was already a website of the same name.

So where did i lie? I didnt.

@William Taft Snacks

I misread your post.

You are completely wrong.

Firstly, the dreamhost user is 4chon.net

And the name is intentionally similar to 4chan.org as it is an extension of 4chan. The name was not at all meant to steal their users, and you have no evidence for this outragous claim, and nor can 4chon be confused with 4chan.

4chon.org is not 4chan.org

4chon .org has been around for a few years.

4chon.net’s admin has been spaming 4chon.org along with other sites, his excuse for the spam on 4chon.org was, despite his site being brand new, ‘users may have typed .org by mistake’.

@William Taft Snacks

Well in your post you said 4chan.org not 4chon.org

Anyway, when 4chon.net was created people WERE looking for it, as people knew about it, you see the website contains previously deleted content from another website, so people were looking for it.

So a simple notification was put on .org incase people found that when they were looking for .net

Im sorry this has caused so much offense that the whole host and all of its websites have to be downed, and even know as .net is no longer hosted by dreamhost the attack continues.

Whose the real bad ones?

May 1st, 2011 at 1:47 pmWilliam Taft Snacks Says:

@Net User

lol typos, yeah happen.

“”Anyway, when 4chon.net was created people WERE looking for it, as people knew about it, you see the website contains previously deleted content from another website, so people were looking for it.””

So your admin and users spams a site with a similar name.

to quote from IRC
“””
i posted one image at the very start of .net, to get users that perhaps misspelt 4chon.net and accidentally went on .org
“””

Secondly, if .net were NOT spammers……..
http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/images/d/d8/Netspamproof.png

that thread is well over a month old, and as of writing has 124 posts and 71 images.

It is nothing but encourgement to spam other sites.

It was not locked users were not banned, thus proving that .net’s staff DO encoruage the spam.

As for the attacks, while they are funny 4chon.org has no connection to them, they are the result of a single bored person with an epic botnet, who is rumored to not even be from the US (so good luck extraditing him lol).

@William Taft Snacks

Firstly, that link is a link to the website which is doing this attack..
Secondly, the images are for advertisement, not spam, we never advocate spam, and you will notice its user name, not the mods or admin, and you get banned now if you talk about posting these on 4chan.
When the site was young we made banners for advertisement, not spam, i dont think advertising your website is immoral or worthy of this attack.

Again it doesnt encourage spam, there is just a strong community spirit and it was for advertisement.

>It was not locked users were not banned, thus proving that .net’s staff DO encoruage the spam.

This does not prove that at all, firstly you get banned for saying lets spam/advertise now, secondly, the thread was just making banners.

As i said before i got banned for advocating advertisement once.

The attacks are from 4chon.org and ED, it has been confirmed, as no matter what we did or apparently did this attack is riduclous.

Forgive us for advertising our new website, obviously this immoral act deserves the whole website, the host and all its sites to be shutdown! (im being sarcastic)

Net User, can you fill me in on the situation with 4chon.net? You say it’s moved to a different host, but it still seems to be down.

This might not be the place for this question, but it’s all I can find.

Oh, also: While it makes sense than .org and ED would be responsible for this, do you have any proof?

Oy Asd, it’s Horse.

Site is at http://temp.4chon.net/new/ for now.

Check http://status.4chon.net/ for updates.

May 1st, 2011 at 1:59 pmWilliam Taft Snacks Says:

@asdjk

There is no real proof either way, however a guy affiliated with ED has claimed he did it, however he could be lying for the credit.

Either way, .org and ED are themselves unresponsible, even if many of the users/staff find it hilarious.

@asdjk

Google 4chon status, theres a temp website.

And admin confirmed it was them. And they heavily implied it on their website.
Besides, who else would it be?

Theyre the ones with the massive problem with us because of some advertisement.

@William Taft Snacks

The admin confirmed it, they implied it, they already hate us, jealousy i suspect, the owner of the new ED is the owner of .org

They write shit about .net which isnt true, they edit actual chat logs about us, and if you try to change it they ban you. Meanwhile they say how much better their website is.

So its the owner of the 2 sites who is doing it, still..

Hes an asshole.

It seems that the problem isn’t advertisements; the problem is jealousy, with accusations of spam as an excuse to justify their hateful actions.
And I actually thought to google 4chon.net status right after posting, but thanks very much.

William Taft, by your logic (the users of the sites are performing the attack and so the sites/owners are not responsible), this attack isn’t justified, because the alleged spam from 4chon.net was from the users, so the site and owners are not responsible.

May 1st, 2011 at 2:09 pmWilliam Taft Snacks Says:

@Net User

Actually if you check the history of the 4chon.net article
http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/index.php?title=4chon.net&action=history

you’ll see that all that has happend is people have attempted to outright remove logs or pictures, not edit.

Also ‘owner of the 2 sites’ lol wut, two differnt people.

@William Taft Snacks

Hahaha, ok i checked your link, everyone editting it is the owners of 4chon.org and members of it, they are just jealous.

And maybe its not the same owner directly but they are directly associated it even says so on the site.

And on that link, nekoarc, hes the owner of 4chon.org

Meepsheep, he goes on 4chon.net and starts spamming shit calling it a shit site, so theyre hypocrites

Honeslty why are you sticking up for them, theyre jealous angry sad people bringing down a whole hosting service.

If anyone took one look at ED they would see what a terrible, racist, homophobic site it was. Its even on the front page.

Ryan Clearly has admitted to doing the attack, we all know who it is.

Well, 4chon.net is a bit guilty of the sins of racism and general douche-baggery as well, although it doesn’t come close to ED. That isn’t a just condemnation.

However, if they’ve admitted being responsible for this, THAT is ample grounds for condemnation.

@asdjk

There is racism on 4chon.net but its just a place which allows free speech. Its not a giant racist gangbang, theres plenty of opposing views. Besides thats only one board of the 4.

Yeah, it’s not the neo-nazi hate-spreading shithole the perpetrators of this attack are trying to make it out to be, that’s for sure.

“The admin confirmed it, they implied it, they already hate us, jealousy i suspect, the owner of the new ED is the owner of .org”

You are so confused, it’s sad yet funny at the same time.

“Meepsheep, he goes on 4chon.net and starts spamming shit calling it a shit site, so theyre hypocrites”

Only stuff I saw was him posting that your site got an article along with a few responses in the other ED thread. When other EDiots saw the one thread saying how they’d boycott ED, they not only laughed, but started trolling in that thread pretty good.

STI’s posting saying that everything’s lies is just him trying to cover his butt. He himself has spammed on my site several times and then came into my irc to ask to be unbanned. Pretty rude actually.

“Theyre the ones with the massive problem with us because of some advertisement.”

Yeah I have a problem with people spamming their garbage on my sites. I spamfiltered it like moot did on 4chan and your people went nuts over it. When STI was asked about why his site was filtered on 4chan, it was because “moot is a f*****”, while in actuality it was due to the heavy amount of spam that they posted there. They even bought other domains to bypass that spamfilter.

Besides that, their site appears to be DDOS-prone anyways, with at least 6 attacks happening during the past 3 months.

Now when I woke up yesterday, I was gonna make a post on there calling them on their spamming, but found out that it was down and then I saw this blog entry. *shrug*

“However, about the IRC chats and apparent other spams, i cannot comment other than i know that i and pretty much all the other users dont even know what this is and have not even heard of it before, furthermore there is a lot of editted chat logs, as we have evidence of the actual ones and the editted ones, but whether they are all like this i cant say.”

for the “edited” logs, only thing i can think of that was actualy removed was a conversation between some users bickering about the aussie internet filter. People have been saying that my logs are redacted and such, but yet in the past month or so nobody has come along to show otherwise.

4chon.org gets 1 post a day… if you’re lucky. So we win on that front.

Ryan is a fat as fuck neckbeard who disabled his facebook because of 4chon.net (facebook.com/ryan.cleary2)

Its the USERS that spam your sites, STI has specifically banned people who support it/do it. Way before the ddos STI was against spam.

That was the userbase.

@NekoArc

Meepsheep has been on .net and called the website shit on our meta, and telling everyone how much better .org is

I have never heard of this apparent spammed garbage on your site and no one has any idea what you are on about, so it certainly wasnt the users if thats what you’re implying.

We have never spammed on 4chan, but we have advertised, there is a difference. Spam is making countless posts and threads everywhere overloading the place, we havent done that, we have simply advertised when people seem to be wanting what we offer.

We have r9k and new, now they were deleted from 4chan, so for example when people say they miss r9k or new, we tell them it still exists on 4chon.net We do not spam, we just tell specific people about the board, it is a bannable offensive to advocate spam on 4chon.net, however telling people who are interested that our site exists is not wrong nor spam.
I do not see how this is spamming.

As for the other domains, yes they were to allow people to be able to find us since we cant post the proper domain, also the are so people can find the site easier if they google something related to the site like “r9k”, so an r9k domain was set up which redirects to the site.

I have seen proof of certain edited chatlogs, i didnt save the pictures, but some were definatly editted and put onto ED to make us look worse.

I just want this rivalry to end, if STI spammed you then non of the users have a clue and if he did was being a bit of a dick i guess, but hes a cool guy otherwise. Apart from that we do not spam or advocate spamming we simply advertise to specific people who would like our website.

“i miss r9k”
“hey you should check out 4chon.net”

Occasionally its happened on a whole thread scale, such as a whole thread on 4chan saying they want somewhere new, so we tell them about 4chon.net, What a dastardly evil thing to do!

Anyway if its not you who did the attack then who is it.

>STI’s posting saying that everything’s lies is just him trying to cover his butt. He himself has spammed on my site several times and then came into my irc to ask to be unbanned. Pretty rude actually.
Several times? Came onto IRC to ask be unbanned? Provide logs and/or evidence.

hello, friends! It appears you’re the lasted victims of nekoarc’s rage over our site being wildly more successful than his. In the past, his rage has manifested in ways such as spamming penises on our boards and starting edit wars on encyclopedia dramatica.

we appologize for his childish behaviour

just remember 4chon.org’s motto:

“no posters lol”

@person
well here’s two instances

here’s an irc log from one of the times
encyclopediadramatica.ch/User:NekoArc/IRC_logs#Jan_20.2C_2011
the newspost on the archive which contains a deleted thread archives.4chon.org/news.php#35
and then one of his other posts archives.4chon.org/r9k/res/732.html#750

Same ip on all of those matches up to the shell he had on n0v4

Hay Strawman, enjoy being banned from ED because of your vandalism? Now since here here just acusing stuff now, how bout I blame ya’ll for the anontalk spam that hit the other week?

Oh, hello nekoarc! i was unaware you had experienced spam in the previous weeks. how unfortunate, i can’t imagine how all three of your posters felt about it! as for us being the source of it, i can’t see why on earth we would want to spam a dead image board. not much else you can do to a site that has no posters, i’m afraid.

perhaps you gained the spam by running a jailbait board? you know how those kinds of things attract pedophiles

4chon.org is a known pedophilia hangout, they have been reported to Perverted Justice and ASACP numerous times by concerned users. Their owner, Ryan Cleary has even lured underage young men before, he is a sicko and they must be stopped.

Their co-owner “NekoArc” has spammed 4chon.net with CP, he runs a pedophilia website with Ryan Cleary.

@strawman

Hey man, don’t hate on jailbait. Oh, and quit being an idiot, you only make us look bad.

God damn I hope STI bans you. And after all that time I spent taking up for tripfags and saying that mods should have limited powers….

“Chris Poole Says:

now that’s a bunch of garbage and you know it. Seems that the trolls can’t even figure out who’s staff on what site

And besides that, I see that the people that got kicked off are spamming their site here with their links to their garbage site. Stay classy guys.

@Lorf
Ignore Strawman, he is a fucking idiot and is not to be taken seriously, and regarding “spam”, that is what the website field is fucking for. That is not spamming. Is NekoArc spamming by putting his site in that field? No? Better check the consistency of your logic then.

Oh hi, nekoarc! why exactly did you decide to change your name to lorf?

Random Fuckbag, my friend, that is what they mean by “spamming.” as in, mentioning that website in any way is “spamming”. their rants make more sense now, right?

They’re butthurt over there because we have a better userbase, and it’s a stupid, childish rivalry.

The EncyclopediaDramatica.ch article made for 4chon.net is especially nasty because they hate us so much, and want our chon to look bad.

From the looks of things, the entire DDoS was their doing just to attack us, 4chon.net.

:/

I find it funny that 4chon.net moved servers onto yet another dreamhost account. What would happen if they got ddosed for a 7th or 8th time? Will they get kicked off of that or will they move to yet another dreamhost account?

It was DEFINITELY 4chon.net.
