WordPress 2.5.1 is out!

A pretty major and important security fix is out for the latest version of WordPress — and it is suggested that you upgrade your sites via our One-Click Installer as soon as possible. For more information on the upgrade, it is suggested you check out the WordPress Development Blog.

WordPress 2.5 available in the One-Click Installer!

Congrats to the WordPress team on shipping one of the biggest updates in recent memory, WordPress 2.5. They’ve completely refreshed the admin interface with the help of Happy Cog and while it might take a little getting used to, it certainly feels a lot nicer. More information on the release is available on the WordPress development blog and screenshots of the new interface can be found here.

The 2.5 update has been made available in the Advanced One-Click Installer and should be a fairly painless upgrade. If you’re itching to get your hands on it, go ahead and give it a spin as soon as you get a chance. We’ll be here if any questions come up, so feel free to file a ticket with our Support Team if you run into any major issues.

P.S. The update to the easy installer should be pushed thru between Monday, March 31st and Tuesday, April 1st. Sorry about the delay, but there are a few things that need to be done to make sure the upgrade goes smoothly for everyone.

P.P.S. If you wish to use the new plugin updater, you’ll need to temporarily disable “Extra Web Security” as there is a conflict with our current mod_security rules. Alternately, you can leave “Extra Web Security” turned on and update your plugins per their individual update instructions. This involves uploading them manually tho and can sometimes prove to be a bit of a hassle. We’ll try to have an update to our mod_security rules in the next few days tho and an update will be posted here when there’s a resolution to this issue.

After taking way longer than we should have to get these out of the way, we’re happy to announce the following one-click upgrades as available in our One-Click Installer:

MediaWiki 1.12.0

If you are running previous versions of any of this software on your sites, please consider taking a few minutes and running the upgrader. It doesn’t take very long to do and staying on top of available upgrades is the best way to make sure your site stays stable and secure.

As usual, if you notice any errors caused by the One-Click Installer, you can let us know by creating a new ticket with DreamHost Support.

P.S. There will also be an upgrade to WordPress as soon as version 2.5 becomes available in about a week or so. Currently it’s testing and getting a few final touches put into place — but I thought it was worth mentioning as there will be some big changes with the admin interface, themes and plugins. To make sure your WordPress based site is ready, you should give this handy rundown by Lorelle VanFossen a once over. That should help cut down on any snags that might be caused by the upgrade.

Web Panel Cronjob Changes

After much research we have noticed that most people who set up cronjobs either through the web panel or through the crontab command line utility never read the emails it sends them, and, in fact, most probably don’t even know they are receiving them. These unwanted and unnoticed emails use up considerable amounts of space on our file servers, as well as causing performance issues if several of the maildirs they are delivered to fill up to capacity, and can cause ssh logins to become very slow, as most shells will check for new email for you at login, and checking 300000 emails can take some time.

Because of this, we’re going to make some changes to the web panel to support changing the email address a cronjob’s output is delivered to. Yes, huge feature, we know The reason it’s being announced here rather than just sneaking quietly into everyone’s web panels is because of the implications. Since we do not have existing data for where emails are being sent, we’ve decided that having it default to being disabled would be the most logical choice.

What does that mean for you? After next Tuesday (February 26th) when you edit a cronjob in the web panel, any other cronjobs associated with that user will get their email delivery disabled until you modify the email delivery settings for those jobs. To fix this, simply modify the other jobs and change their email delivery settings!

We ended up getting 66 donations for a total of $5878.47 which we matched and then donated to Union Rescue Mission who in turn got it doubled for a grand total of $23,513.88!

Their site says that’s enough to feed 14,337.7317 people!

Looks like the WordPress team has decided to put out one last update before the new year. WordPress 2.3.2 contains bug fixes and a few crucial security updates, so it’s suggested you update as soon as possible via the “One-Click Installs” section of the web panel.

One-Click Upgrades: phpBB, phpGedView, dotProject

We’ve got a bit of an early Christmas (or late Chanukah) present for those of you running the above mentioned bits of web based software. In an afternoon flurry of productivity, ~~phpBB has been upgraded to version 3.0 [Release Notes],~~ phpGedView was bumped up to version 4.1.3 [Release Notes] and dotProject is now at version 2.1.1 [Release Notes].

If you weren’t already familiar with how to do so, you can upgrade your One-Click Installs by logging in to panel.dreamhost.com and going to the One-Click Installs page under the Goodies tab. If you happen to hit any snags in doing so, our support staff is standing by ready to help you out.

Update: Apparently phpBB 3.0 is a pretty radical upgrade and requires a little more than our installer is configured for currently. Sorry about that! A few people have had issues with the upgrade, so we’ve gone ahead and rolled the current version on the installer back to 2.0.22. Sadly, the 3.0 upgrade will have to be pushed back until some of our more seasoned vets can figure out a proper plan of action on how to handle it safely.
