Fileserver problem on Frisky

Posted (October 29th, 2008 at 10:52 am PST) by Kyle

The dreaded fileserver which has been plaguing the Frisky cluster lost a drive this morning and panicked while reconstructing. Our admins are diligently working to resolve the problem with the fileserver and the affected machines. We have already began offloading customers from this fileserver to new machines but there is a large volume of data and it will take time (the offloading started several days ago). We apologize for the repeated issues customers on this cluster are having (cluster = mail server from the account status link on the panel) due to this fileserver, the good news is once we complete the data migration these sort of problems will be a thing of the past.

UPDATE: The file server is back up. The moves we are running to empty this hardware have started up again. Ultimately we will not have full resolution on this recurring problem until the hardware is out of the loop. Initially we had tried replacing parts of the hardware to resolve these problems. Since that didn’t work, we’re emptying it and removing it from active service. Sorry about the problems this has caused you.

Babysitting Bugsy

Posted (October 28th, 2008 at 9:17 pm PST) by Jason C

It would appear that the server “bugsy” had a few issues that required the loving attention of a member of our admin team.  As it stands, the server is going thru a deep file system check that requires some close monitoring due to possible intervention.  Once it is done with that, everything should hopefully come back up and return to normal.  If that doesn’t happen, we’ll be sure to post an update here.

UPDATE: We have been working on Bugsy throughout the evening and we are at a point where we are working on repairing the disks.  If that does not work, we’ll restore from backups and then repair the disks.  Unfortunately, we have no ETA on this process, but we will update here as soon as we know more.

UPDATE 10/29 3:10p Pacific: Unfortunately we still do not have a solid ETA on a resolution for bugsy. We are however attacking the issue with both solutions listed above. We have a new bugsy up and we are copying data from our backups to this server. The new bugsy is the live server so you may notice that your files are missing. Do not fear, they are being copied from backups. We are also still trying to repair the disks on old bugsy. If that is successful then old bugsy will go back live. So we’re basically in a situation where the first solution to finish will be the one we go with.

Update 10/30 11:00a Pacific: The data being copied from backups to the new Bugsy is roughly 50% done. This unfortunately means that we are likely looking at more than 24 hours for the moves to be complete. As your files are moved your sites will be working, but we unfortunately do not have a way to prioritize the moves by account at this time. The disk repair on old Bugsy was not 100% successful unfortunately. The plan is to let the copy of the backups finish, then run another copy of data on old Bugsy to the new one. The backups we have are unfortunately 2 weeks old, so after we get that data up we will run the second copy in order to get your most up to date files. Sorry about the problems this is causing you. A free month of hosting will be added for customers on the Bugsy server.

Update 10/31 3:30p Pacific: The data moves from the 2 week old backups to the new server have finished. We are now starting the data move from old Bugsy to the new Bugsy. Those of you mentioning you out like to opt-out on the second restore have been set to skip. We are also not going to overwrite any files currently on the server if they have a newer date than the ones copying over. So your sites should be up now. Sorry about the problems this has caused you.

Not Feeling So Frisky

Posted (October 27th, 2008 at 6:23 pm PST) by Jason C

One of the central network file servers on the frisky server cluster was giving us a little trouble and may have caused the following servers to go sideways:

barracuda beaker boxster bridgatchina bugatti bumper cadillac camaro catalyst cayman chennai chevelle circatreews01 colintsui coneybeare continental corvette creativeliberations cutlass dart democracy dmc edsel eirenemachine elcamino eldorado elise enzo eredux esprit fairlane ferrari fiat firebird fozzie funty1 galaxie gdr gibble godfuel guru highground hpl hudson hummer hupmobile impala jaguar jetta jonlin knocker kyfserver labnol lesabre logichost malibu marcianos mclaren merkur miata model-t montecarlo murcielago ninja nova olds ontrack packard palmea passat phaeton phiya pierce pinto probe prowler ps3649 ps3718 ps3796 ps3995 ps4207 ps4224 ps4364 ps4389 ps4418 ps4566 ps4602 ps4707 rambler rawstock renault rolls sciencewerk scion scthreads sexylinker shelby sinagoo skylark smokelabs sos spyder sten stingray stratus studebaker tempest tesla thegibson thog thunderbird titan tomkincaid touareg towncar trans-am veyron vsuno wcweb1 wisdev workserver wrangler xaevir xcopi yonder zawi

If you’re on one of the servers listed above and have been seeing recent issues with your sites, things should be leveling out now.  There are a handful still going thru the reboot process, so please be aware that things aren’t fully back to normal just yet — but they should be soon.

Filer on the fritz (back online!)

Posted (October 24th, 2008 at 3:00 pm PST) by Leon

One of our filers, scraper, had his poor widdle feewings hurt and has decided to stop working. Affected machines are:

achilles aviation backside badillo baht bazooka blueprint boppity boyd caramello centipede cheeto cheezit crack cruisin dinero dorito formosa go gummi happy herod hillhurst hillmont hoho hyperion ikari ike jaedyne jalapa julie jurupa katamari kitkat knocker larchmont lei limbo-randy look moorpark munchies nash ninja orbital outside payday pernod pineapple powerbar pretzel pringle randy-vserver07 randy-vserver09 randy-vserver11 rhod riyadhorg rollo roscoe rossmore selma shocktart skittle slauson spree spunky-vserver19 spunky-vserver20 tootsie twinkie ugh venice vermouth vex virgil westside wilmington wilshire yoda york

Our esteemed admin team is on it. Sorry about that!

Update 4:19 Pacific: The filer has been fixed, it appears to have been a cabling or HBA issue on one of the disk trays. We are now running around rebooting the various servers it crashed, service should be restored in about 15 minutes. Please let support know if your stuff is still down after that!

Network hiccup

Posted (October 24th, 2008 at 10:58 am PST) by andrea

One of our network providers went down for a few minutes but one of the other ones jumped in shortly after to pick up the affected connections. Things were a bit slow and gappy because of that, but the failed network is already working again. Things should be back to normal, but do let us know if you’re still having problems connecting. Please provide details, so we can better assist you.

Sorry about all the inconvenience this has caused.

Router reboot this Friday night

Posted (October 23rd, 2008 at 11:20 am PST) by Kelly

This Friday, October 24, 2008 at 10:15pm Pacific time we will be performing an OS upgrade on our core router. This requires a reload, during which time all DreamHost services will be unreachable for about 15 minutes. After this time everything should be back to normal.

This is related to:

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/10/22/network-issues/
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/09/21/major-network-issues/

Cisco’s technical support is not certain this will fix the issue, however they advised that our current version of IOS is deferred due to many related bugs. We are hopeful this will make this problem go away, or at least less prevalent.

Edit: 10:14 PM Pacific Rebooting in about 1 minute! See you in 15!

Edit: 10:34 PM Pacific We’re back! The router is still thinking quite hard about things, but based upon blinking hard disk lights, and my general ability to update this post, we’re more or less back online! I will be going through and making sure all of our servers are up and running. Please contact support if you have any lingering issues.

we are currently experiencing some connectivity issues at our primary facility, which is causing access issues for all of our customers. We have our network folks working on it and expect a resolution soon.

We will post updates as things progress, and thank you for your patience while we resolve this matter.

Update 1:50pm: We ran into a Cisco bug which was causing the problems. We opened a bug report with them, and waiting to hear back on how to proceed. Please check back for further updates.
